Job Description:
Founded in 1910 and located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Mount Royal University grew into a vibrant college in the 1930s and became a mid-sized university in 2009. Mount Royal has carved out a distinct niche by offering smaller class sizes, a robust liberal education and unique undergraduate programs. Currently, more than 15,000 credit students choose from 13 bachelor degrees and 36 majors.
Mount Royal University is located in the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut'ina and the Iyarhe Nakoda. We are situated on land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. The traditional Blackfoot name of this place is "Mohkinstsis," which we now call the city of Calgary. The city of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation.
Mount Royal University is committed to removing barriers and fostering the inclusion of voices that have been historically underrepresented or discouraged in our society. In support of our belief that diversity in our faculty and staff enriches the work, learning and research experiences for the entire campus community, we strongly encourage members of the designated groups (women, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, members of visible minorities, and diverse sexual orientation and gender identities) to apply and self-identify.
Mount Royal University’s Aviation diploma program has been in operation since 1970. The two-year program operates eight aircraft at Springbank Airport along with three simulators. In addition to a Diploma in Aviation, students can graduate with a Commercial Pilot License and Group 1 Instrument Rating, with an option for some students to complete a Flight Instructor Rating after the diploma.
Reporting to the Chair, the simulator instructor will oversee the flight simulator portions of the aviation flight training courses (FLTR) and curriculum for the Aviation Diploma program. The majority of the role will be conducting the simulator instruction. Most instruction will be one-on-one but will occasionally be up to 4 students at a time. The instructor will monitor progress, note areas of curriculum that need improving based on student results and will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of 3 simulators – 2 on campus and 1 at Springbank campus.
The purpose is to have one person provide a cohesive training program, and being able to work full time with simulator training will provide a better sense of the strengths and weaknesses of the program and where curriculum can be improved. This would make one person responsible for the simulator program of the Diploma, working with the Chief Flight Instructor and Chair.
Most of the work will be at the main campus, but occasional travel to Springbank campus is also required.

- Conduct simulator maintenance and create and update simulator operating guides

- Ensure uninterrupted flight training for students and protocols for instructors operating the simulator
- Two-Year Diploma from a University or equivalent
- Commercial Pilot License and Group 1 Instrument Rating is required at a minimum by Transport Canada in order to teach the aviation curriculum
- 3 - 5 year of related experience in the aviation industry is required, such as charter / air taxi, airline or flight instructing
