Under the general supervision of the Head of Navigation, the incumbent instructs officer cadets, officers of the Canadian Coast Guard and other maritime personnel, develops and revises techniques of presentations; sets and marks examinations; writes course objectives and lesson plans; serves as Course Coordinator when required; plans and serves on sea training cruises as Commanding Officer or Watchkeeper aboard the College training vessel and performs other related duties.

The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) owns and operates the federal government's civilian fleet, and provides key maritime services to Canadians.

As a Special Operating Agency of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the CCG helps DFO meet its responsibility to ensure safe and accessible waterways for Canadians. The CCG also plays a key role in ensuring the sustainable use and development of Canada's oceans and waterways.

A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

Possession of a Master Mariner Certificate, or a Master near Coastal Certificate of Competency or a Coast Guard Command Certificate.

Significant* experience of work in the field of the maritime navigation.
  • Significant means: Substantial experience as an officer in charge of a navigational watch at sea, normally including at least twelve months of sea-service as a Commanding officer or second-in command of a vessel requiring the possession of a Master Mariner Certificate of Competency.

Recognized educational training in adult education.

Degree equivalency

Experience teaching in the field of maritime navigation.
Significant* experience as a navigating officer, chef officer and/or commanding officer on board Canadian Coast Guard Vessels.
  • Significant experience normally means a minimum of five (5) years.
