Research Associate (Limited Term) - Radio Transient Localization

The Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Research Associate (Limited Term) for a 6-month appointment, renewable as funding allows. The anticipated start date is January 14, 2019.

The responsibilities of this position centre around organizing and implementing a VLBI observation of transient and persistent radio sources. The position will be based in the Dunlap Institute's Long Wavelength Laboratory (, under the supervision of Prof. Keith Vanderlinde. The appointee will be expected to pursue related research, supervise the work of graduate and undergraduate students, spec out, identify, and source relevant equipment, organize a software pipeline effort and participate in instrument design and grant planning activities. This work will take place in the context of collaboration with the CHIME/FRB team, and the appointee will be further expected to participate in collaboration activities.

PhD or equivalent certification in astrophysics

Experience organizing a team of student researchers on complex data analyses.
At least one year of relevant postdoctoral experience
Some understanding of radio astronomical instrumentation and polarization calibration.

Advanced skills in radio interferometry, large-scale distributed data processing, radio astronomy pipelines and transient science

Demonstrated excellence at scientific writing
Demonstrated ability to work with students
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a team
