Nature of Work: Employees in this class are responsible for the overall monitoring of the Fitness areas at The Works. There are a variety of functions to perform for the purpose of ensuring users have paid for services, equipment is being used properly and is in safe working condition, and that all other services related to the fitness division is being provided. Employees work with little supervision, and are expected to perform their duties with minimal direction.
Employees may work daytime, evenings or weekends. This position reports directly to the Supervisor of Fitness and in his/her absence, to the Facility Supervisor/Aquatic Coordinator.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Weight Room Instruction/Counseling Responsibilities
- Instructing new or prospective members in the use of the Fitness equipment.
- Setting up client’s exercise program.
- Providing ongoing consultation RE: proper technique, safety and general exercise information pertaining to weight training, cardio training and equipment usage.
- Screening participants for injuries and/or medical conditions which may be affected by training or vigorous exercise and taking action (i.e.: referring them to their practitioner for Medical clearance).
- Supervising the fitness rooms and reception areas, hot tub, change rooms and saunas. (This is an ongoing procedure which focuses on service and client care but also emphasizes safety)
- Setting up equipment in Field House as required.
Administrative & Reception Desk Responsibilities
- Checking that membership and fitness passes for those using the fitness area/courts are current. Deals with clients directly if their membership has expired and advises the Supervisor of Fitness of any problems.
- Checking and ensuring that all users are wearing access bands/stickers. Approaching users who are not and ensuring that they purchase an access band/sticker.
- Dealing with the general public as well as existing clientele. (This involves explaining the various programs, giving tours of the facility, helping with the selection of the most suitable program and with the gathering and dispensing of any pertinent information that is required).
- Dealing with and acting on Client concerns, fostering a warm and friendly atmosphere, and promoting the facility and its programs in a positive manner.
- Completing appropriate registration forms and entering client data into the computer system.
- Collecting information on programs as requested.
Cleaning Responsibilities
Keeping the Fitness areas clean at all times by performing the following:
- Clean windows and mirrors.
- Clean and service weight machines, free weights and cardio equipment.
- Ensure an adequate towel supply by washing and drying towels constantly and cleaning lint trap daily.
- Keep Fitness reception areas clean and tidy.
- Clean inside and outside of lockers.
- Clean free standing & mounted fans in change rooms & fitness area
- Support Maintenance duties.
Other Responsibilities
- Assist in training and orientation of new employees.
- Report malfunctioning equipment to the on-duty facility supervisor.
- Any other related duties as required.
Education and Qualifications:
Minimum of two years’ University with a major in Physical Education, Kinesiology or acceptable equivalent post-secondary training. Specialized training in use of strength training and cardio equipment. Current CPR C and Standard First Aid. Excellent communication skills both verbal and written (English), and an ability to deliver exceptional customer service.
Experience:
Experience working with public in a fitness and sport environment.
