Summary

The Formulation Assistant works with the Formulation Lead along with the Health & Nutrition Manager to ensure the goals of the department are met. This position is to assist the Formulation Lead in all areas of nutritional development of products, including macro and micro-ingredient development, formulation, data entry, as well as nutritional monitoring and reporting. This position is accountable for assisting and supporting efficient and timely launches of new products and assisting in monitoring the nutritional integrity of our ACANA and ORIJEN recipes and validation of a Biologically Appropriate diet. The Formulation Assistant works out of our Morinville Research and Innovation (R&I) Centre.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for assisting the Formulation Lead with the development of complete and nutritionally balanced recipes for dogs and cats.
  • Thorough maintenance of records of all formulations, test results, and other intellectual property, including storage in a secure manner.
  • Participate in the development of ideas for new product development projects that are in alignment with the Company’s vision, mission and values.
  • Consistent support to the formulation lead in relation to data entry and nutritional reporting and monitoring.
  • A willingness to be actively involved in a creative learning environment and passion to develop new skills
  • Assisting in the development of departmental standards, practices and procedures that comply with all relevant regulatory requirements (AAFCO, FEDIAF, FDA) and with corporate policies, practices and procedures.
  • Demonstration of knowledge of the Company’s policies and practices regarding health, safety and the environment, including commitment to personal compliance with same.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.
Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Science, MSc/PhD considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with animal feed formulation.
  • Experience in companion animal nutrition considered an asset.
  • Computer proficiency with MS Office programs.
  • Passion to learn, develop, and assist in the implementation of nutritional strategies for dogs and cats.
  • Detail-oriented, with a good ability to review documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance to SOPs and GMP.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills with the ability to multi-task and set priorities.
  • Uses discretion and judgment in handling confidential, proprietary or sensitive information.
  • Able to work effectively independently or within a group.
  • Work encompasses both an office and a pet food production environment, with exposure to dust, noise, odours, and/or fluctuating temperatures.
  • Intermittent physical activity includes walking, standing and sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds using correct and safe lifting technique.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Ability to attend and/or conduct presentations/meetings.
  • PPE may be required for some locations where this position is regularly required to work.
  • Must be able to physically inspect company property and assets.
  • Some extended hours of work may be required.
