About the Opportunity
LearnStar is seeking a dependable, caring and enthusiastic Homework Helper to join our new after-school team at Goulds Elementary!
The Homework Helper will support children with homework, educational activities and daily program routines while helping create a safe, welcoming and positive environment.
As Goulds Elementary offers French Immersion programming, we are especially interested in candidates with French-language skills or a French Immersion background who can assist students with homework in both English and French. French proficiency is considered a strong asset.
The program will also feature the LearnStar Innovation Academy, providing hands-on experiences in STEM and science, art and creativity, innovation and problem-solving, and outdoor recreation.
Responsibilities
- Assist students with homework and other educational activities.
- Provide patient, encouraging and age-appropriate academic support.
- Support French Immersion students with French-language homework, where applicable.
- Help children build confidence, independence and positive learning habits.
- Assist with Innovation Academy activities and recreational programming.
- Help receive and gather children at the beginning of the program.
- Support attendance, supervision and safe dismissal procedures.
- Follow direction from the Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor.
- Act as a positive and respectful role model.
- Encourage positive behaviour, friendships and inclusion.
- Help maintain a safe, organized and welcoming environment.
- Assist with program setup, cleanup and daily routines.
- Communicate professionally with children, families and fellow staff.
- Follow all LearnStar policies, procedures and safety expectations.
Qualifications
- Experience working with school-aged children is preferred.
- French-language skills or a French Immersion background are considered a strong asset.
- Ability to support elementary-level homework in both English and French is preferred.
- A genuine interest in supporting children’s learning and development.
- Patient, dependable, caring and enthusiastic.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Current First Aid certification or willingness to obtain the required course before starting.
- Current Vulnerable Sector Check or willingness to obtain one before starting.
- Availability Monday to Friday from 1:50–6:00 p.m. and from 7:30 a.m.–6:00 p.m. on PD/PL days.
