Job Summary
The Strategist, Strategic Indigenous Black and People of Colour (IBPOC) Initiatives is a cross-functional position in the VPS portfolio. Under the supervision of the Associate Director, Strategic IBPOC Initiatives, the Strategist partners with a broad range of stakeholders to define and remove systemic barriers to IBPOC student success across the Vancouver campus. The Strategist is responsible for supporting the development, implementation and evaluation of strategies and initiatives to embed equity, inclusion and diversity in services, supports and programming that allow for all students to be equitably supported to succeed. The Strategist is also responsible for creating capacity across the portfolio to advance intercultural, decolonization, Indigenization and anti-racism efforts focused on students.
Organizational Status
The Strategist reports to the Associate Director, Strategic IBPOC Initiatives, Office of the Vice President Students. This position also works closely with the Office of the Vice President’s Project Team, the VPS senior leadership team, students, faculty, staff, and community members.
The incumbent will be based at UBC Vancouver and work performed occurs in a fast paced, dynamic, high performance team environment. Some evening and weekend work is required.
Work Performed
Conducts needs assessments and researches current and best practices related to equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-oppression, intercultural understanding, decolonization and anti-racism with the goal of providing evidence-based consultation and strategic support to student-facing units.
Supports the development and implementation of organizational change strategies that promote equity, diversity and inclusion in all learning, living and working environments for students across campus, and will actively contribute to institutional, intellectual and personal transformation for students, faculty and staff.
Develops, implements and evaluates strategies and initiatives that strengthen systemic change, culture and capacity for inclusive excellence with the goal of enhancing the experiences of historically marginalized populations.
Facilitates the integration of effective strategies, initiatives, programming focused on students across the University. Consults on the development of goals & implementation of initiatives assessing their potential effects on Indigenous and equity-deserving students and advising on opportunities, risks and solutions. Advises and participates in university-wide committees.
Prepares comprehensive strategic plans, proposals, reports, publications and other written work as required for leadership to establish and implement systems change processes and policies that enable inclusive and equitable student experiences.
Facilitates dialogues and group conversations in which there is potential for conflict among participants, with an understanding of how identity, history, power, systematic discrimination and other equity and inclusion issues play into conflict as it emerges in the university community.
Supports administrative oversight of the Anti-Racism Initiatives Fund, including: supporting the development of award, processes, adjudication of the award, management of the budget, and annual reporting.
Reports on relevant initiatives to the Associate Director, Strategic IBPOC Initiatives and Executive Director, Office of the Vice President Students.
Partners with the Planning and Institutional Research and the VPSO Project Team to develop IBPOC reports and analysis of the data to better understand the IBPOC student experiences and to inform policy development.
Collaborates and coordinates with the Inclusion Strategist for UBC Okanagan, Senior Advisor Indigenous Affairs, Associate Director, Strategic Indigenous Enrolment Initiatives, and the Equity and Inclusion Office.
Supports and utilizes appropriate communication strategies to disseminate information to stakeholders and to build partnerships.
Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with staff, faculty, departments, and community representatives involved in projects.
Regularly and actively engages in critical reflection and dialogue (both individually and as a team member) about inclusion, diversity, equity and the implementation of social justice principles in the workplace.
Researches, synthesizes and compiles information from various multiple sources into summaries and reports required by the Associate Director, Executive Director, VPS, VPS, and VPS Executive Team.
Performs other related duties as requested.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The incumbent acts collaboratively and within broad guidelines. The incumbent must exercise initiative and sound judgment in making decisions and planning and executing services and programs. Must demonstrate tact, sensitivity and confidentiality in dealing with clients.
The position will also lead in the effective planning, development, implementation and support of cultural, anti-racism, equity and inclusion services, programs and initiatives. Failure to perform effectively would cause significant loss of support for and credibility from program participants, internal and external collaborators and stakeholders, senior administration and Associations. Error in judgment determining resources and techniques needed could affect the quality and success of the projects and credibility of programs that have both strategic and operational impact.
The result of inaccurate or inappropriate advice or neglect of duties relating to equity, inclusion and or diversity could result in the University's failure to comply with federal and provincial human rights and equity legislation, such as the BC Human Rights Code and result in liability for such human rights violations.
Supervision Received
The Strategist works independently with direction from the Associate Director, Strategic IBPOC Initiatives.
Supervision Given
May coordinate project teams or working groups of varying composition, depending on the scope and nature of the specific project. Project teams may include University faculty members, students and staff, members of other educational institutions, external clients and specialists hired for specific tasks. May hire, supervise, and evaluate student employees or volunteers.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of four to five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Academic and Past Work Experiences
Experience working with faculty, staff, and students in a post-secondary institution, preferably a university, in a role specific to IBPOC students.
Experience working with IBPOC communities to develop meaningful and mutually beneficial partnerships.
A deep understanding of justice, equity, and inclusion and how practices, policies, and procedures can support or thwart equity and inclusion in post-secondary or other institutional environments.
In-depth knowledge of issues regarding IBPOC students in secondary and post-secondary education, combined with a strong commitment to advancing the educational aspirations of IBPOC peoples through skills in program development, process design, facilitation and evaluation.
Educational programming
Proven experience and demonstrated knowledge in the development and implementation of educational programs, and organizational change strategies related to justice, equity, and inclusion within a post-secondary context.
Ability to lead and participate comfortably in discussions on equity, diversity, inclusion using current discourse e.g. anti-oppression, social justice, anti-racism, decolonization etc. while remaining open to new and challenging ideas.
In-depth knowledge of anti-racism, and IBPOC culture, history and socioeconomic issues within British Columbia and Canada.
A detailed knowledge of University processes, student services, programming, and resources; as well as, a strong knowledge of University governance, structures, policies and procedures.
Demonstrated project management skills with ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet multiple deadlines.
Interpersonal skills
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to navigate difficult and complex conversations with interdisciplinary and intercultural students, faculty, and staff.
