Sr./Lead Design Engineer
This is a senior engineering position with responsibilities for designing and launching new interconnect products by coordinating the efforts of a global team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong, professional attitude and excellent communication skills. Due to the nature of this role, we seek a people-oriented individual dedicated to meeting deadlines with a solid foundation in mechanical design and related engineering experience.
What does a Sr./Lead Design Engineer do?
- Coordinate a global team of engineers in the design, development, and testing of new products that meet cost targets, performance requirements, and project deliverables
- Develop concepts / proposals for new or revised products, ensuring manufacturing feasibility with thin strip progressive stamping, thin wall injection molding, and automated assembly manufacturing processes
- Specify materials for molding, stamping and die-casting as well as plating requirements
- Drive product design risk reduction efforts through activities such as FEA, DFMEA, tolerance analysis, prototyping, and verification testing prior to production tooling launch
- Lead design review meetings to ensure adherence with product requirements, applicable standards, etc.
- Facilitate design for manufacturability (DFM) by engaging with internal/external tooling and process development teams
- Engage with vendors/suppliers to explore cost-reduced products or processes which may be applied to new and existing product designs
- Collaborate with Signal Integrity (SI) Engineers to ensure new designs meet electrical performance requirements while considering manufacturing limitations
- Review, approve, and process drawings, BOM's, & Item Masters
- Adhere to and promote proper change control processes; encourage user adoption of WindChill, our Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software
- Utilize industry standards & competitive benchmarking to build out requirements for qualification testing of new products
- Resolve engineering and design related issues using structured root cause analysis techniques such as Eight Disciplines (8D), 5 Whys (5Y), Design of Experiments (DOE), etc.
- Provide support to manufacturing and quality engineering teams as required
- Other related duties as required
What you bring to the table
- University or College degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
- CAD proficiency (SolidWorks preferred)
- 7-10 years of design engineering experience
- 3+ years of project management skills
- Openness and flexibility with respect to changing priorities
- Ability to coordinate a global team in support of product development
- Legally eligible to travel in North America, Europe, and Asia
- Willingness to work flexible hours with team members based in Shenzhen, China & Cochin, India, as well as support colleagues and customers globally
Desired to Have:
- Knowledge of connectors or small mechanical/electrical parts
- Electrical interconnect related design experience
- Direct customer interface experience on technical design-related topics
- Understanding of progressive stamping and injection molding manufacturing processes
- Proven tolerance analysis skills
- FEA, simulation and modeling experience (SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS)
- Working knowledge of GD&T
- Experience with product safety certifications (UL, CSA, CE)
- Understanding of statistical process control (SPC)
