The Position
Under the direction of the Technical Superintendent, the Marine Lead Hand supervises and coordinates day-to-day vessel maintenance and repairs according to regulatory requirements, manufacturer recommendations and established industry and company standards to ensure that all vessels are maintained in a safe and seaworthy condition.
Job Functions
- Plans, organizes and delegates all technical and maintenance work to direct reports to maintain work capacity according to operational priorities while supporting the development and well-being of the marine technicians.
- Diagnoses technical equipment failures and breakdowns through the use of their technical expertise to provide solutions, execute and coordinate the work so that the repairs optimize the functionality and operability of the tugs and of the human resources.
- Reviews and assigns vessels Preventive Maintenance as per records in the planned maintenance system (NSE) to ensure all vessels are maintained and serviced within the specific industry and manufacturer recommendations to prolong their operational life.
- Conducts toolbox safety talks, SHEQ analysis and risk assessment to achieve improvement of risk awareness and contribute to the reduction of incidents.
- Assists the crew and provides On-Call capacity with technical advice by assessing mechanical issues to propose practical solutions and determine the need of specialized assistance or to determine the viability of vessel function and required next steps.
- Verifies that employees and contractors are adhering to all established SHEQ processes supporting the supervision of both, including the Permit to Work system to achieve accident and incident prevention to the environment or to others' wellbeing, and execute all work activities safely.
- Supports Site Inspections by providing expertise, oversight and availability to contribute to achieve Industry standards and maintain operational feasibility.
- Supports the coordination and supervision of contractors to oversee that the proper activities are conducted in a way that ensures the most successful outcome while abiding by all safety and regulatory standards.
- Assists, encourages, and leads by example the mechanical performance and the timely development of administrative tasks, such as data entry into the maintenance planner program to maintain the appropriate status of job orders and achieve traceability and compliance with maintenance planning, while providing leadership and mentorship to others
Minimum Requirements
- Red Seal or other accepted Marine Technical Certification
- 2-3 Years’ experience in a technical leadership capacity
- At least 4-5 years’ experience in a marine technical position
- Experience with Occupational Health & Safety
- Must be able to provide On-Call support
- Must be able to travel within Canada by air
- Must be legally allowed to work in Canada
- Must have a valid BC Driver's License.
