- You are between the ages of 15-30 years at the start of employment
- You were registered as a full-time student during the previous academic year and intend to return to school full-time during the next academic year
- You are a student in a secondary, post-secondary, CEGEP (Quebec only), vocational or technical program
- You are a Canadians citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
- You are legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations
About ABC Literacy Canada
ABC Life Literacy Canada is a national non-profit organization that has been inspiring Canadians to improve their literacy skills since 1990. We envision a Canada where everyone has the skills they need to live a fully engaged life. We work with business, government, communities, and individuals across Canada to create and share free literacy programming for adults and families. Our programming covers financial literacy, family literacy, workplace literacy, health literacy, digital literacy, and civic literacy.
- ABC Life Literacy Canada is looking for a Programs Assistant for a summer student internship (8-week fixed-term contract position).
You will be reporting to the Community Coordinator and working closely with all team members to develop new resources/activities for adults and children, focusing on existing or new programs. You will be involved and gain experience in all stages of educational curriculum development from outlines, to writing, to working with designers to produce Clear Language and Design resources. The role will also involve data entry of evaluation forms, supporting Programs Coordinators in outreach to new communities/organizations as well as research into emerging literacy trends and best practices.
You will be a key member of our small and nimble office at Yonge/Eglinton in Toronto currently working remotely. We're a team of ambitious lifelong learners, keen to make a difference in our community and grow our skills while we're at it. We care about the literacy learners, teachers, workplaces, and volunteers we support: compassion is an important part of our work. So is being effective and efficient. We work at a high capacity, and our Programs Assistant will, too.
Contract: 8 weeks full-time.
o Data entry of evaluations
o Developing new resources/activities for adults and children, focusing on existing and new programs
o Support outreach to new communities/organizations
o Outreach to community organizations about ABC’s free literacy programs
o Research emerging literacy trends and best practices
o Develop information sheets for sharing with larger literacy and learning sectors (including newcomers, indigenous communities and people with disabilities)
o Support event logistics and administration
o Data Entry + program evaluation tracking
o Support social media and other communication platforms to promote ABC initiatives
o A post-secondary student and you meet the eligibility requirements
o Studying Education or Adult Education (or a related field of study)
o Proficient in time management and reporting to deadline
o Highly organized and detail-oriented
o A confident communicator, with excellent verbal and written skills
o Professional, ambitious, and driven to take initiative
o A strong problem solver who responds well under pressure
o Able to work independently and cooperatively in a team environment
o A lifelong learner
o Interested in and enthusiastic about literacy with a willingness to learn more about the cause

o Fluently bilingual in English and French (not required)
o Experienced in working with literacy programs or adult learning
o Experienced in writing and editing for Plain Language
o Strong research skills
o Comfortable working with remote teams
