To support us on our journey, Sinai Health System is looking for a Diet Technician to support Nutrition, Milk Bank Department at our Mount Sinai Hospital Campus.

The Diet Technician will perform all duties necessary to ensure the highest standard of handling, pasteurization, and storage of human donor milk following approved Milk Bank SOP’s and guidelines from MSH Infection Control, Public Health Food Manufacturing Standards and the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA).

Responsibilities:
Accurately weigh, measure and prepare batches for pasteurization
Prepare labels to identify mother’s milk for each deposits and document in Timeless Milk Tracking System the number and weight of milk volumes per deposit
Liaise with Lactation Consultation and fellow diet techs daily
Communicate with donors on a daily basis to schedule shipping of their donations
Answering Milk bank phone lines and redirecting calls to LC's , Director or Supervisor if required
Retrieving phone message on a daily basis
Creating LIS labels for culture samples
Prepare milk to be pasteurized using aseptic techniques
Disinfect and Sanitize pasteurizers and counters daily. Sanitization of beakers and other equipment after pasteurization in dishwasher
Daily Documentation of fridges and freezer temperatures
Accurately weigh and receive incoming milk
Communicate with lactation consultants, co-workers, and moms to ensure accurate milk preparation, collection and storage
Answer Milk Bank phone line, retrieve phone messages and return calls or re-direct to Lactation Consultants as required
LIS label for pool and batch cultures. Print Post pasteurization (batch) bottle labels
Collect culture samples from pool into labeled test tube and cryovial using appropriate technique
Label culture tubes and place in specimen bags, take to fridge and both cryovial to freezer and place in pool pre-culture bin in designated bag of the month
Using Timeless software - generate batch labels for post pasteurization milk and move milk from freezer to fridge
Document number of bottles pasteurized onto batch sheet
Take all culture samples to the lab on the 14 floor by 16:30 hours
Create online pick-up/delivery orders
Send milk collection kits to donors via courier services
Package and dispense human donor milk using Timeless Milk Tracking System software to hospitals in Ontario as per received orders
Report any unsafe situation to the Milk Bank
Job Requirements
Food and Nutrition Degree/Diploma from a recognized university or community college
Food Safety Training Certificate
Recent Diet Technician experience in a healthcare environment
Knowledge of safe food handling procedures
Canadian Society of Nutrition Management membership an asset
Good communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to liaise with health professionals and patient families
Excellent oral and written communication skills, excellent problem solving and time management skills
Demonstrated attention to detail with a high level of accuracy
Proven leadership skills
Advanced computer skills and familiarity with Timeless software
Proven organizational and time management skills
Capable to work under pressure and meet time deadlines as part of a team or independently
Ability to stand for long periods of time doing repetitive action, bend, push and lift up to 20 pounds
Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history
