Junior/Intermediate Electrical Engineer
Company Overview
We are a private, employee-owned engineering firm. We have specialized in Electrical Engineering design, testing and commissioning for Industrial and Power Utility clients for over 40 years. We have completed projects for clients throughout Atlantic Canada from offices located in Dartmouth and Sydney, Nova Scotia, and Saint John, New Brunswick.
Position Summary
We are seeking a skilled and collaborative Junior or Intermediate Electrical Engineer to join our engineering team. In this role, you will take ownership of electrical system designs, manage small-to-medium-scale projects, and work with minimal supervision. This position, which is based out of our Sydney, Nova Scotia office, bridges technical execution and project leadership, offering a direct path to senior engineering and project management roles while helping mentor our junior staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineering Design: Lead the design and development of complex electrical systems, including power distribution, lighting, grounding, and control systems.
- Analysis & Modeling: Perform advanced engineering calculations, power system studies (short-circuit, coordination, arc flash), and energy modeling using industry software.
- Project Management: Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables for assigned electrical scopes. Act as the primary technical contact for clients and contractors.
- Quality Assurance: Review drawings, specifications, and cost estimates to ensure accuracy, quality, and complete compliance with local building and electrical codes.
- Mentorship: Provide guidance, technical support, and drafting reviews for junior engineers, EITs, and CAD technicians.
- Field Engineering: Conduct site inspections, condition assessments, and commissioning support to verify that installations match design intent.
- Prepare Job Proposals: Prepare financial cost estimates and prepare proposal documents for new projects.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (B.ENG,BSEE) from an accredited university.
- Experience: 4 to 7 years of progressive experience in electrical engineering design.
- Licensure: Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing, or eligible for immediate registration with the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia (APENS).
- Software Mastery: Familiarity with AutoCAD, power analysis software (e.g., ETAP, SKM, or EasyPower), and Microsoft Office.
- Code Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), National Building Code, and relevant IEEE/CSA standards.
- Communication: Proven ability to author complex technical reports, present designs to clients, and coordinate seamlessly with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Valid driver's license and vehicle for regular site travel.
Preferred Attributes
- Proven track record of managing projects from the initial concept phase through to construction completion with high level of client satisfaction.
- Strong problem-solving skills under tight deadlines and changing project scopes.
- Experience with, or Interest in Learning Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) design for Electrical Substations and Industrial Controls, including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s).
- Proven hands-on attitude to life, with a keen interest in knowing how things work and the motivation to become the go-to technical expert in each area related to this profession.
- Ability to manage personal work schedule to handle multiple projects at once while maintaining deadlines.
