KB RACKING is a company specializing in providing commercial solar mounting solutions for rooftops across North America. Since 2010, we have installed over 300 MW of clean renewable energy across the United States and Canada.
Based out of downtown Toronto, our team delivers on the company's core values in every project: Simple, Solutions, Teamwork, Ownership, Integrity & Curiosity. Our team consists of talented and committed individuals who want to support the development of solar energy and a future powered by renewable energy.
We are looking to hire a Product Design Engineer to join our Product Development team. Reporting directly to the Product & Distribution Manager, this role will be a key contributor to product innovation at KB Racking, turning ideas into practical, manufacturable solar mounting solutions. The successful candidate will combine exceptional CAD capability with strong mechanical judgement, hands-on prototyping, testing, and manufacturing knowledge. This position offers the opportunity to own increasingly complex design work and grow into a technical leadership role as the department expands.
Responsibilities will include, but by no means be limited to:
- Design new products, components, systems, and product improvements using SolidWorks.
- Develop concepts from sketch through production-ready CAD models, assemblies, drawings, and specifications.
- Build, test, evaluate, and refine prototypes through structured design iterations.
- Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles to every design.
- Research materials, manufacturing processes, and technologies to improve product performance and reduce cost.
- Perform engineering calculations, tolerance analysis, and FEA to validate designs.
- Support laboratory testing, product validation, qualification, and certification activities, including UL 2703, UL 3741, and CSA programs.
- Collaborate with suppliers, manufacturers, and testing laboratories to optimize manufacturability, quality, and production efficiency.
- Lead technical investigations, root cause analysis, and design reviews for existing and new products.
- Investigate product, engineering, and compatibility-related issues and implement practical engineering solutions.
- Prepare engineering drawings, specifications, BOMs, test reports, product manuals, bulletins, and technical documentation.
- Maintain reference data using research, testing results, and manufacturer documentation.
- Identify opportunities to reduce product costs, improve manufacturability, and expand the company's product portfolio.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives across existing products and processes.
- Work cross-functionally with Sales, Engineering, Operations, and Project Management to solve customer challenges and support strategic projects.
- Manage assigned projects and deliverables in line with company targets and client requirements.
- Help establish engineering best practices, design standards, and documentation processes.
- Stay current on industry trends, manufacturing technologies, and competitive products.
The successful candidate:
- Has a university degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Is exceptionally proficient in SolidWorks, including sheet metal design, assemblies, drawings, and production-ready detailing.
- Can evidence strong mechanical intuition and creative product-development capability.
- Understands DFM, DFA, tolerances, material selection, and manufacturing processes for steel and aluminum products.
- Can show hands-on experience with rapid prototyping, 3D printing, product testing, and design validation.
- Has experience performing FEA and applying engineering calculations to design decisions.
- Has excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrates leadership potential and the ability to grow into a senior technical role.
- Possesses knowledge of solar PV or solar racking systems (an asset).
- Has 0-5 years of mechanical or product-design experience in a manufacturing environment. Formula SAE, Baja SAE, robotics, capstone, co-op, or equivalent hands-on engineering experience is strongly valued.
