Overview
Open Arms Resource Centre is seeking Support Workers (Nights) to join our 24/7 Shelter Program. In this role, you will support adults experiencing homelessness by providing day-to-day assistance, helping them access resources, and working toward stable housing outcomes.
You’ll play a key role in creating a safe, respectful, and supportive environment while helping guests navigate complex life situations and build independence.
Job Specifics
- Job Type: Full-time, In-Person (predominantly working at shelter) night shifts
- Location: Kentville, NS
Responsibilities
Guest Support
- Support guests in accessing income, employment, and community resources
- Assist with housing applications, landlord connections, and move-in coordination
- Help guests navigate complex challenges (e.g., crisis, legal, financial, health)
- Provide client-centered support using trauma-informed and harm-reduction approaches
- Maintain accurate notes and documentation
Program Operation
- Support daily needs (food, clothing, hygiene, harm reduction supplies)
- Monitor the shelter environment and respond to crises as needed
- Enforce shelter policies and support a safe, respectful space
- Provide informal counselling, advocacy, and conflict resolution
- Maintain cleanliness and assist with meal preparation
Team & Organizational Support
- Participate in team meetings, supervision, and guest case conferences
- Communicate regularly with the Shelter Manager
- Follow organizational policies, procedures, and training requirements
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in human services, homelessness services, community support, or a related field is required.
- Strong problem-solving, decision-making, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to respond effectively in dynamic and crisis situations.
- Ability to work respectfully, non-judgmentally, and supportively with vulnerable adults using trauma-informed and harm-reduction approaches.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team while maintaining reliability in a 24/7 shelter environment.
- Ability to safely carry out housekeeping, cleaning, and general shelter support duties.
- Willingness to follow organizational policies and procedures and participate in required training and supervision.
Compensation & Benefits:
- $21/hour during probation period, increasing to $22/hour. An additional $2/hour for overnight shifts.

Pay: From $21.00 per hour
Expected hours: 32.0 – 40.0 per week
