The Town of Gander is currently accepting applications for a Permanent Full Time Fire Fighter position within the Fire and Public Safety Department.
POSITION IDENTIFICATION
The Town of Gander provides fire rescue services to the community and motor vehicle rescue to the surrounding areas. The mandate of the department is to provide citizens of Gander with fire protection through fire prevention awareness and the use of modern firefighting techniques. To act as a “point of contact” for the general public in the event of an emergency and to initiate the necessary response for any request for assistance received from the general public.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBLITIES:
Monitors, receives, dispatches, and responds to fire and emergency calls; Provides mutual aid to Gander International Airport, 9 Wing Gander, other fire departments, and essential services as required; Responsible for all after-hour Town-related calls, and monitors fire and trouble alarms for buildings within the Municipality; Responds to all emergencies within the Town of Gander boundaries; Drive, operate, and maintain all firefighting apparatus and equipment in a safe and professional manner; May be required to enter hazardous environments for firefighting or to perform rescue; Performs routine inspections of all fire department vehicles and equipment on an assigned schedule; Present fire safety and prevention programs to various groups including fire station tours; Receives non-emergency requests for assistance from the public and forwards them to the appropriate personnel; Performs minor maintenance on emergency apparatus and equipment; Keep current in up-to-date firefighting practices by participating in fire department training; Conduct and maintain training on a volunteer basis; Performs minor building maintenance and cleaning as well as other assigned duties; Firefighters are responsible for maintaining and testing equipment to the appropriate NFPA standards. (Including but not limited to; hoses, ladders, SCBA, extinguishers and life safety rope); Maintaining records and logs of equipment testing / maintenance, as well as firefighting equipment inventory; Firefighters are responsible for creating, updating and maintaining pre-incident plans of local businesses and high-density living structures; Maintaining and inspecting fire extinguishers for Town of Gander owned buildings and on fire apparatus.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Must possess the agility and stamina to perform all firefighting and rescue functions under adverse conditions at any time of the day or night; Requires the ability to react quickly and safely while remaining calm under stressful situations; Wearing self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing while working in toxic or oxygen deficient smoke-filled environments; Carries heavy fire fighting equipment and sometimes casualties while climbing ladders and maneuvering through buildings and confined spaces; Will regularly be exposed to and have to work in extreme weather conditions; Exposure to fire, smoke, carcinogenic, and other hazards that will adversely affect each of the senses, including smell, touch, taste, hearing, and sight; Could be exposed to traumatic events that my involve injury, dismemberment, or death; May be required to work at elevated heights up to 100 feet; Work environment exposes the firefighter to very high levels of physical, mental, and emotional stress caused by fire and rescue objectives to preserve life and property in an effective manner; Requirement to work as a team member with career and volunteer members in dangerous and hectic situations with the possibility of injury, loss of life or property.
EDUCATION & TRAINING
High school graduate or equivalent; Firefighter Level I certification and be eligible for Level II within a year of hire; Must have Advanced First Aid for Firefighters with CPR, AED and Oxygen Certification.
OTHER SKILLS
Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office 365; Must have a valid Class 3 Newfoundland and Labrador driver’s license with air brakes and a 5-year driver’s abstract; Clear certificates of conduct including an RCMP Criminal Record Check and a Provincial Court Check, is a condition of employment; A medical clearance certificate is a condition of employment; Knowledge of fire prevention techniques is sufficient to advise members of the public on basic fire prevention practices;
Knowledge of the Town of Gander organizational chart to be able to redirect queries from general public to the proper authorities; Medically and physically fit with the completion of an annual firefighter’s medical and physical evaluation; Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Working knowledge of safe work practice and procedures.
SALARY: Non-Unionized position, 42 hours/week - $64,515.36 - $75,195.12
