The Engineering 1 Program and the Faculty of Engineering at McMaster University are seeking an outstanding candidate to fill a three-year contractually limited appointment. The appointment will begin on July 1, 2019, or shortly thereafter. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute towards the development and implementation of The Pivot, the largest transformation of the student experience ever taken in 60 years at McMaster Engineering.

At McMaster, all undergraduate students take a common first year program, Engineering 1. This provides a solid foundation in the fundamentals of engineering disciplines and prepares students to choose from one of up to 40 programs available for their subsequent years. Through the Pivot, the Engineering 1 Program has redesigned the first-year curriculum, replacing existing courses with a single full-year course that includes a design spine throughout the year and provides a more self-directed and project-based learning approach. Applicants will hold a doctorate in Engineering, or a related discipline. Applicants with a doctorate in Education will also be considered. The candidate must possess excellent communication skills and a strong commitment and demonstrated ability in classroom instruction, including teaching in large classes. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute towards development of the new first-year curriculum, teach the new first-year course alongside a team of Engineering 1 Instructors, and engage in pedagogy-related research. A professional engineering license, or eligibility for registration, is desirable. Evidence of both quantitative and qualitative research methods will be considered an asset. Evidence of leadership skills, excellence in service, and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures is a necessary requirement for this position.
McMaster’s large, attractive campus, the interior of which is open only to pedestrians and cyclists, is at the western end of Lake Ontario. The University is minutes from downtown Hamilton, a city rich in history and culture with a vibrant arts community. Nearby recreational and conservation attractions include Cootes Paradise, the Bruce Trail, the Niagara Escarpment, the Waterfront Trail, and the Royal Botanical Gardens. Surrounded by spectacular nature and unique neighbourhoods, Hamilton is ideally located halfway between Toronto and Niagara Falls.
