Reporting to the Coordinator, Academic Success Centre, the Learning Strategist is responsible for the development and delivery of learning support programs and services for students in a post-secondary educational setting; the identification and implementation of effective learning approaches and strategies, and for recruiting, training, mentoring, and providing feedback to peer tutors. The Learning Strategist will work in collaboration with the Academic Success Centre staff and tutors to develop and sustain exemplary and comprehensive learning support programs and services for adult learners, including learning strategies, and various supplemental instruction programs such as workshops, online programming, tutoring, learning circles, etc.
Responsibilities & Duties:
In consultation with the coordinator, provide comprehensive learning development supports for students, individually and in groups, using a variety of appropriate learning methods, assessments, approaches, and strategies
Plan, develop, and facilitate exemplary and comprehensive learning support programs and services for students including tutoring, drop-in sessions, individual sessions and workshops.
Assist in the recruitment, training, facilitation, monitoring, and provide feedback to tutors in the Academic Success Centre to foster use of a wide variety of learning strategies
Guide, assist, and advise tutors, staff and volunteers
Play a lead role in the orientation, training, and mentoring of part-time peer tutors
Assist tutors to identify students who require exceptional learning supports and provide an appropriate response strategies
Identify, create, revise and adapt appropriate learning resources for students
Facilitate the effective use of emerging academic technologies, including Blackboard, to enhance learning support services
Promote a respectful and supportive learning environment based on the principles of inclusion, equity and diversity
Develop, and participate in, initiatives to foster continuous improvement of Academic Success Centre programs and services
Act as primary liaison with individual faculty and departments to introduce and promote supportive instruction services, to determine high-risk courses and programs, and to identify students who require additional learning supports
Maintain a student-centered approach to service, fostering an atmosphere of trust and integrity
Be highly sensitive to issues of diversity of population, and confidentiality
Master’s Degree in Adult Education or equivalent with 4 years teaching experience
Minimum 4 years’ experience developing and delivering academic support programs and services for students in a multi-disciplinary, post-secondary setting
Demonstrated effectiveness in collaborating with faculty and staff on interventions as they relate to learning, academic and transition success
Demonstrated understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion to meet the needs of our diverse students, staff and the university community
Comfortable working as a member of a team, using team-based approaches, and coaching
Thorough knowledge of educational theory and practice, with a concentration in adult learning theories and strategies
Proven effectiveness as an instructor of adults using a variety of formats including in-person and online
Proficiency in facilitation, problem-solving, inter-personal communication
Ability to work cooperatively, complemented by the ability to exercise independent judgment and ethical decision-making with minimal supervision
Ability to balance interruptions, multiple and varied tasks, and confidential information with discretion
Strong customer service skills and ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty and staff
Evidence of continuing engagement in self-education and professional development to remain current in the field of learning strategy development and support
