Rouge Hill Consulting is a sign permit, engineering, and regulatory consulting firm working across Canada. We get signs approved — handling permits, variances, structural engineering, and code compliance for sign companies and end users. We work alongside our engineer of record on the structural side: foundations, wind loads, anchor design, and the calculations that prove a sign will stand. On the regulatory side, we read Sign By-laws and Building Codes to make sure projects comply. We also run Allowd, our software platform that turns dense municipal sign by-laws into clean, automated compliance checks.
It's a niche most people don't know exists. It sits at the intersection of engineering, architecture, planning, and law — which is exactly why it's interesting. You'll learn a body of knowledge almost nobody has, and the skillset transfers well beyond this industry.
What you'll actually do
This is a high-volume, detail-heavy role. On any given week you'll be:
- Reading signage drawings and processing a large volume of permit applications — filling out forms accurately and fast
- Reading Sign By-laws and the Ontario Building Code closely to prepare Sign Code Check Reports
- Reviewing signage proposals for compliance with by-laws and the OBC
- Running multiple small projects at once — building schedules, keeping our project management software current with updates, chasing down the people you're waiting on, and staying on top of everything without being reminded
- Communicating constantly with clients, municipalities, and engineers by email and phone to move projects forward
- Marking up and annotating drawings using PDF tools
- Writing variance reports and building the rationale for why a sign that breaks a rule should still be approved
- Building site plans in Google Maps and doing deep by-law, zoning, and code research
- Sending weekly client updates, running off-boarding feedback meetings, and joining client meetings where needed
- Spotting process inefficiencies and helping fix them
- Helping test and debug Allowd for accuracy
Optional, if it interests you: there's a path to pursue your P.Eng. and get hands-on with signage design and structural work. Not required, and not expected — it's there for the right person who wants it.
What we're looking for

- Good with numbers and comfortable working precisely; this work doesn't forgive sloppiness
- Organized and self-directed — we'll point you at a problem, not hold your hand through it
- Genuinely wants to grow and learn a niche field
- AutoCAD is not required, but it's a helpful asset if you have it
