We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented permanent, full-time Controller to join our team in our Edmonton office. As the Controller, you will play a crucial role in overseeing financial operations and reporting. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, a thorough understanding of accounting principles, experience in cost analysis within a manufacturing environment, and leadership in managing the Accounting and Payroll team.
Responsibilities:
Mentorship, Succession, The People side
- Manage the Accounting and Payroll department, providing leadership, guidance, and support.
- Mentor and coach finance team members, fostering their professional growth and development.
- Develop and implement training programs to enhance the skills and capabilities of the Finance team.
- Identify and nurture talent within the team, supporting succession planning initiatives to ensure continuity and organizational resilience.
Financial Management
- Develop and maintain accurate financial records, including general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, inventory, and fixed assets.
- Prepare financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and variance analyses.
- Monitor and analyze financial performance, identify areas for improvement, and recommend corrective actions.
- Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with financial regulations and standards.
Cost Analysis and Reporting
- Conduct cost analysis to optimize manufacturing processes, materials, and labor costs.
- Calculate and analyze cost of goods sold (COGS) and gross margin to identify opportunities for cost savings and operational efficiencies.
- Collaborate with other departments to gather and analyze relevant data to support accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Prepare and present periodic financial reports to senior management, highlighting key performance indicators, variances, and trends.
- Conduct financial modeling and scenario analysis to evaluate the financial impact of new product lines and strategic initiatives.
Compliance and Audit
- Ensure compliance with provincial and federal regulatory requirements, industry regulations, and professional accounting standards.
- Coordinate with external auditors to facilitate the completion of annual audits and reviews.
- Develop internal control guidelines, policies, and procedures for budget accounting, cash and credit management, administration, and other activities.
- Make recommendations for adjustments to financial policies and procedures to be in line with current accounting professional standards.
Strategic Planning
- Provide financial insights and analysis to support strategic decision-making and business planning.
- Assess current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement and implementing new processes.
- Evaluate investment opportunities and provide financial analysis to assess their viability and potential return on investment.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA designation is required.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a financial management role, preferably within the manufacturing industry.
- Strong understanding of cost accounting principles and experience managing cost of goods sold.
- Proficiency in financial software and ERP systems; experience with Traverse, Ceridian, and/or DayForce would be an asset.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
- Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy and integrity.
- Demonstrated leadership skills, with a focus on coaching and developing team members.
