Lead with purpose. Build relationships. Inspire generosity.
The South and Central Health Foundation (SCHF) is seeking an experienced, community minded leader to serve as its next Executive Director.
For more than four decades, SCHF has worked to enhance the health and well-being of communities throughout south and central Newfoundland. As a registered charity, the Foundation raises funds to support the delivery and improvement of health care, community services and programs throughout the region in partnership with NL Health Services.
Our vision is simple but meaningful: To inspire generosity to achieve excellence in health close to home.
We are looking for a leader who can help us continue to turn that vision into impact.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is the senior staff leader of the Foundation and is responsible for its day-to-day administration, organization and management. The Executive Director also serves as chief advisor to the Board on matters relating to the management of the Foundation.
This is a highly visible leadership position requiring someone who can move comfortably between strategy and operations — building relationships with donors and community partners, leading fundraising initiatives, managing staff and finances, working collaboratively with the Board and NL Health Services, and representing the Foundation throughout the region.
The successful candidate will be a relationship builder and strong communicator who understands that successful fundraising begins with trust, connection and a genuine belief in the communities we serve.
Key Responsibilities
As Executive Director, you will:
- Provide leadership for the overall administration and operation of the Foundation and implement the strategic direction, policies and priorities established by the Board.
- Serve as chief advisor to the Board and provide timely information, suggestions or options and reporting to support effective governance and decision-making.
- Lead and grow the Foundation's fundraising and fund development activities, including annual campaigns, corporate partnerships, sponsorships, grants, special events, major gifts and other giving opportunities.
- Build, cultivate and steward meaningful relationships with donors, businesses, community organizations, service groups, volunteers and other partners throughout the region.
- Work collaboratively with NL Health Services and participate on its Capital Equipment Committee to help identify potential health-care funding priorities for consideration by the Foundation Board.
- Provide sound financial management, based on the approved budget of the Board, including budget development and monitoring, financial reporting, audit oversight and responsible stewardship of Foundation resources.
- Lead, support, develop, and manage Foundation staff and foster a positive, respectful and accountable workplace, employing conflict resolution techniques as necessary in a timely manner.
- Ensure the Foundation maintains appropriate compliance with Canada Revenue Agency requirements, applicable legislation, its By-Laws and Board-approved policies.
- Strengthen the Foundation's public profile through effective communications, community engagement and promotion of the impact donor support is making throughout the region.
- Identify new opportunities, partnerships and approaches that will strengthen the Foundation and support its long-term sustainability.
What You Bring
We are looking for a candidate with a combination of education, leadership experience and demonstrated ability appropriate to this senior position.
The ideal candidate will bring:
- Post-secondary education in business administration, nonprofit management, fundraising, communications, public administration, health administration or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Progressive leadership or management experience, preferably within a charitable, nonprofit, healthcare, community or fundraising environment.
- Demonstrated experience in fundraising, donor development, sponsorship, grant development, business development or revenue generation.
- Strong financial management and budgeting skills.
- Experience leading and developing employees.
- Exceptional interpersonal, relationship-building, communication and presentation skills.
- Strong organizational skills, sound judgment and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Demonstrated integrity, professionalism and discretion.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality under a variety of circumstances.
- An ability to work effectively with a volunteer Board of Directors and a broad range of community and organizational stakeholders.
Experience working with a Board of Directors, knowledge of nonprofit governance and registered charity requirements, and experience within the healthcare or charitable sector would be considered assets.
Most importantly, we are looking for someone who can build relationships, inspire confidence and bring people together around the Foundation's purpose.
