10C Shared Space is the hub for community changemakers in Guelph. We are a not for profit social enterprise creating a platform for those working across sectors and engaging in collaborative work to improve our community. 10C has established an ongoing seasonal Urban Agriculture and Container Garden Educational Program. This program brings container gardens to animate our outdoor space in downtown Guelph. The CSJ participant should have knowledge of gardening (seed saving, vegetables, edible flowers and pollinators) with some hands-on garden experience, understanding of basic principles of container gardens, and be ready to engage with the public through on-line platforms.
The responsibilities of the Urban Agriculture and Container Garden Program Assistant are:
- assist in current food security initiatives
- Maintain the 10C container gardens outside on the seasonal patio on Carden Street, growing seasonal vegetables, herbs and edible flowers
- Work with Kitchen Manager to direct garden produce to 10C kitchen for use
- Support the creation of online tools that education the public about container gardens including: soil requirements, pests, plant choices, cleaning and sanitization
- Seek to engage upwards of 400 people through online interactions
- Develop outreach (e.g. through social media) and follow up emails focused on container gardening to continue to engage public in container gardening
- Help our team animate the 10C patio as an urban garden destination, a stop for people to look, learn and be inspired with a takeaway, whether this is an idea, a skill, a postcard, a resource connection or a healthy landscape package
- Research and seek out content to showcase types of container gardens (slideshow, talk with a local guest speaker, short-film, etc. with a focus on online engagement and programming)
- Must be able to lift, push, pull, move product, equipment and supplies up to fifty (50) pounds. Ideally the candidate would hold a valid drivers licence.
As a social innovation hub, 10C is a platform for EVERYONE to connect to work on change. This position will increase education about food and agriculture, introducing newcomers, those new to Canada, Guelph and to 10C to food we can grow right here. We are fully accessible with nearby public transit.
Supervision and Mentoring:
Supervision Plan: 10C’s staff team (3FT individuals Executive Director, Community Animator and Harvest Impact Development Lead) and (3 part time individuals, including, Events Activator, Accounts Manager and Kitchen Manager) will provide orientation, training and supervision and evaluation. The 10C workplace is active and supportive with a variety of collaborative experiences and learnings possible. The CSJ participant will participate in the weekly team meeting, to review completed project work, set goals and timelines and resolve any issues or questions that arise. The supervision and work within the team will also focus on helping to develop specific skills and interests indicated by the participants as their areas of development.
Mentoring Plan: On a weekly basis, the CSJ will be mentored one-on-one by the 10C team members that most directly reflect their job roles and responsibilities. The CSJ participant will be able to work directly with their mentors to develop a workplan, identify goals, participate in ongoing job evaluation, identify personal growth and skills development. The CSJ participant and mentors will meet virtually on a regular basis to address any challenges and learning opportunities. The mentors will work in particular in identifying with the CSJ participant skills developed during service that can be broadly applied to future work. If learning opportunities arise over the work period e.g. online course, workshops, seminars the mentor will try to provide the opportunity for the Container Garden Education Assistant to participate and will review the learning in the context of the current and potential future job.
Communication: The employee will be required to create e bulletins and newsletter content to engage the public and provide education and outreach on subjects including but not limited to; food security, container gardens, water conservation in the garden, pollination/pollinators, garden pest and soil health.
Digital Skills: The CSJ participant will learn to use various social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter), contact and project management software (e.g. Keela, Mailchimp) as well as software used for managing contract and space use (Office R and D) and events (Eventbrite).
How to use these platforms will be enhanced with an understanding of communication through digital media, for example accessibility requirements for social media posts.
WordPress content entry and basic design skills will also be relevant to this position, the CSJ participant may have the opportunity to learn how to complete basic tasks in these areas.
Leadership: The employee will have an opportunity to deliver workshop content and digitally engage with the public. The CSJ participant may have volunteers under their management that will assist with gardening tasks. For this the CSJ participant will need to provide direction and support to volunteers.
NOTE: Applicants must be between the ages of 15 and 30 and meet eligibility criteria for the 2019 Canada Summer Jobs program. Preference will be given to applicants who are enrolled in or have completed a post-secondary program with a focus on: sustainability, urban planning, horticulture, environmental studies, food studies, etc. Students in other fields and high school students who have gardening knowledge and experience and interest in community gardening may also be favourably considered.
Hours will be divided between at-home work and on-site hands-on work. $17/hr, 20 hours/week July 15 - November 15th 2020
