Haru BBQ Korean and Sushi Restaurant is a locally loved, family-owned establishment in Nanaimo. We recently moved to a new location and are excited to offer an All-You-Can-Eat (AYCE) buffet! We serve a wide variety of authentic Korean dishes, including bulgogi and beef galbi, alongside fresh sushi rolls, nigiri, and tempura. Because all of our BBQ is cooked fresh in our kitchen rather than on table-side grills, our back-of-house team is the true heartbeat of our restaurant.
The Role
We are looking for a reliable and hardworking Kitchen Helper / Prep Cook to join our growing family. You will play a crucial role in ensuring our kitchen runs smoothly during busy AYCE buffet services. If you thrive in a fast-paced environment and have an interest in Korean and Japanese cuisine, we’d love to meet you!
Key Responsibilities
- Ingredient Prep: Wash, peel, slice, and dice vegetables, seafood, and meats for both the Korean hot kitchen and the sushi bar.
- Marinades & Sauces: Assist in preparing traditional marinades for our signature dishes like beef galbi and bulgogi.
- Buffet Support: Help monitor, prep, and restock food levels for the AYCE buffet to ensure items are always fresh and ready for service.
- Station Maintenance: Keep workstations, equipment, and storage areas clean, organized, and sanitized according to health and safety standards.
- Team Support: Assist line cooks and sushi chefs with basic cooking tasks, frying tempura, and dishwashing support when needed during peak hours.
Requirements
- Previous experience in a kitchen or food prep role is a strong asset, but we are highly willing to train the right candidate.
- Ability to comfortably handle the fast-paced, high-volume environment of an All-You-Can-Eat restaurant.
- Strong attention to detail, reliability, and a solid work ethic.
- Valid FOODSAFE Level 1 certification (or a willingness to obtain it quickly).
- Physical ability to stand for extended periods and lift heavy items (e.g., bulk ingredients).
- Must be legally authorized to work in Canada.
