Our client, a growing civil construction contractor in the Lower Mainland, is seeking a Controller to join their team. Specializing in civil infrastructure, site services, utilities, and excavation and shoring, the company delivers complex construction projects for both public- and private-sector clients.
This is a hands-on leadership position for an experienced construction accounting professional who will take ownership of the company’s accounting and finance function. The Controller will focus on bringing key accounting activities in-house, implementing project-level job costing, strengthening financial reporting, and working closely with ownership as a trusted financial advisor.
- Take ownership of the company’s day-to-day accounting and finance function and transition key activities from external providers in-house.
- Implement and maintain project-level job costing processes and reporting structures, ensuring costs are accurately captured against individual projects and cost codes.
- Develop and maintain WIP reporting, project forecasts, budget-to-actual analysis, and project profitability reporting.
- Analyze project and company financial performance, identify emerging risks or variances, and provide financial insight and recommendations to ownership.
- Work closely with Project Controls to ensure project costs, budgets, and forecasts are accurately reflected in financial reporting.
- Oversee AP/AR, payroll accounting, reconciliations, month-end close, and financial reporting.
- Establish and improve internal accounting procedures, financial controls, and reporting processes as the company continues to grow.
- Support the financial and accounting implementation of HCSS HeavyJob and HeavyBid.
- Act as the primary liaison with external accountants and coordinate financial information required for year-end and review engagements.
- Manage key financial relationships with banking and bonding partners.
- Mentor existing accounting and administrative resources and help build the internal accounting team as the company grows.
- CPA designation required.
3–5 years of experience operating at the Controller level is preferred.
- Construction accounting experience is required, with a strong understanding of contractor and project-based accounting.
- Strong hands-on job-costing experience is required, including project-level cost tracking, cost-code structures, and project-level financial reporting.
- Strong experience with WIP reporting, project forecasting, cost-to-complete, budget-to-actual analysis, and project profitability.
- Experience implementing or significantly improving job-costing and accounting processes.
- Strong full-cycle accounting knowledge, including AP/AR, payroll accounting, month-end close, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Experience establishing and improving financial controls, accounting procedures, and reporting processes.
- Comfortable partnering directly with ownership, project teams, external accountants, banks, and other financial partners.
- Experience with HCSS HeavyJob and/or HeavyBid is considered an asset.
- Hands-on, proactive approach with strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Competitive base salary of $100,000–$140,000/year, commensurate with experience.
