Summary
Reporting to the Chief Geotechnical Engineer the purpose of this role is to support the execution of the ground control program at our Keno Hill operations.
The Keno Hill mine, located within the Keno Hill Silver District in Canada’s Yukon Territory. Keno Hill, is one of the highest-grade silver districts in the world, is situated 350 kilometres north of Whitehorse, and lies within the traditional territory of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun. It comprises 242 square kilometres (km2) with numerous mineral deposits and more than 35 historical past-producing mine sites. Keno Hill is expected to produce 2.7-3.0 million ounces of silver in 2024 as the mine ramps up production.
The mine is owned and operated by Hecla Mining Company, headquartered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Established in 1891, Hecla has a rich history as a distinguished and respected precious metals producer. Prepare technical proposals and reports.

Project management of geotechnical engineering assignments and construction inspection projects.

Conduct and coordinate a wide variety of geotechnical investigations and design that may include underground opening stability assessments, Dry Stack Tailings Facility (DSTF) construction, monitoring and inspection, or geo-environmental projects.

Maintain and update, as required, the geotechnical design criteria based on geotechnical data and operation experience.

Liaise with approval agencies, sub-consultants, and subcontractors.

Work closely with corporate geotechnical engineers to ensure corporate standards are implemented at site.

Be responsible for the underground backfilling technical support and QA/QC.

Provide feedback and identify opportunities to enhance mine designs and plans to successfully develop the project.

Develop, implement, and maintain geotechnical monitoring programs according to best practices
-
Collect and interpret geomechanical data (ie. Face mapping, core logging, etc.).

Developing, implementing, and ensuring compliance with Quality Assurance and Quality Control programs.

Maintaining, calibrating, and enhancing numerical models for informing stability of existing and planned underground excavations.

Manage and scope geotechnical related consultants and contractors.
-
Perform regular underground and surface geotechnical inspections.
-
Train technical and operational staff to ensure adequate level of geotechnical knowledge and understanding.

Understand and ensure compliance with the Hecla safety policies and governmental safety regulations.

Bachelor’s Degree in Mine Engineering or geological engineering with at least four years of experience practicing in the geotechnical engineering domain in underground mining operations.

Experience in geotechnical challenging underground mines is strongly welcome.

Experience with surface geotechnical engineering for mine infrastructure – tails facilities, waste dumps, ponds, etc. Experience with permafrost and arctic climates is preferred but not required.

Working knowledge of Deswik, and good knowledge of geotechnical software including Unwedge, RS2, and Map 3D.

Above average knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Strong oral and written communications skills.

Be a collaborative team player that works well in multidisciplinary teams.

Ability to understand and demonstrate safe work practices.

Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.

Maintaining good housekeeping standards
Employees will be frequently exposed to; outside weather conditions, snow conditions; extreme cold, extreme heat, potentially hazardous wildlife; moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; explosives and vibration. The noise level in most work environments is occasionally loud. This position will require you to work a rotating shift of 14 days on and 14 days off and you will be provided camp housing and meals.
