The Human Resources Services team at McMaster partners with departments, faculties, teams and stakeholders across the university to align efforts that enable institutional priorities, help them achieve their goals, deliver excellence in service and solutions, empower learning, as well as champion opportunities for individuals to grow their careers at McMaster. Within Human Resources, the Total Rewards unit is responsible for planning, designing, analyzing, and developing strategies related to McMaster University’s total rewards programs. The components of which include: compensation, job evaluation, defined benefit pension plans, group RRSPs, extended health and dental plans for active and retired employee groups, long-term disability, life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment plans. The Total Rewards unit works collaboratively and in an integrated manner with all other areas of HR to deliver expert advice and service excellence.
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Total Rewards, our team is seeking to recruit a Program Manager, Benefits to use their expert knowledge and experience in benefit plan management and administration to develop a formal benefits strategy to guide the University’s continuously evolving benefit plan(s). With over 60 individual benefit plans covering more than 7,500 employees (both active and retired), we are looking for someone with a least 5 years of senior level experience, a CEBS designation and a university degree in Business Administration, HR or related discipline to navigate and coordinate our complex plan with the various university stakeholders.
The ideal candidate enjoys working independently while contributing to the larger Total Rewards strategy as a Benefits expert. In addition, you are a top performer with a proven track record of investigation, program implementation and building relationships with critical external stakeholders. The Program Manger will represent the University on various benefit committees, liaise with benefit providers to advocate for McMaster’s current and future needs and work closely with the Senior Manager of Total Rewards on the annual renewals for the various plans. To be successful in this role, you must be viewed as a trusted partner by organizational leaders, union partners, employees and internal Human Resources partners. Emphasis will be placed on your ability to delve into, investigate and resolve issues, analyse benefits utilization data and create complex spreadsheets to identify trends and develop recommendations, review benefit contracts, plans, collective agreements and other resources to confirm benefits eligibility and entitlements for a variety of employment scenarios, as well as develop a comprehensive communication strategy to ensure that all stakeholders are aware of the benefit plans while highlighting the value of the plan.
This is an exciting opportunity to combine your extensive knowledge, experiences and skillsets to contribute to the benefits Centre of Expertise and to position yourself as a subject matter expert and strategic business partner. You will work closely with other HR professionals to design and deliver training, research best practices in benefits system design, and operationalize McMaster’s benefit plans.
