The Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society (VAFCS) is a non-profit charitable organization serving the Urban Aboriginal community with a mandate to provide programs and services that will contribute to the cultural, educational, social, economic, and recreational development of Urban Aboriginal people. The Society manages twenty-three programs and services through three locations in Vancouver. The Friendship Centre at 1607 East Hastings is a community-led organization creating meaningful change for the Urban Aboriginal Population that we serve. VAFCS is currently seeking an individual connected with Indigenous community, highly organized, and self-motivated to work with us!
We are seeking a Maintenance Supervisor for VAFCS. The ideal candidate has Aboriginal life experience or has worked in the Metro Vancouver Aboriginal community with firsthand knowledge of the common life experience of Aboriginal Peoples. Qualified Aboriginal candidates are preferred in accordance with Section 41 of the BC Humans Rights Code.
SUMMARY:
We have many people utilizing the building from Newborn to Elders, and we need to ensure the safety, security and maintenance of the buildings. The Maintenance department reports directly to the Director of Operations and in their absence, you report directly to the Executive Director of the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society (VAFCS), and you will primarily be responsible for the following four main areas:
DUTIES:
1. Cleaning (45% of time)
- Maintain acceptable standards for cleanliness;
- Cleaning building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing or vacuuming;
- Gather and empty trash;
- Picking up around the garbage and cardboard bins;
- Service, clean and supply restrooms;
- Clean and polish furniture and fixtures;
- Clean windows, glass partitions and mirrors by using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges and squeegees;
- Dust furniture, walls, machines and equipment;
- Make adjustments and minor repairs to heating, cooling, ventilating, plumbing and electrical systems;
- Mix water and detergents in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications;
- Steam-clean or shampoo carpets;
- Remove and reapply floor wax;
- Clean and restore building interiors damaged by fire, smoke, or water, using commercial cleaning equipment; and
- Clean chimneys, flues and connecting pipes using power and hand tools.
- Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment in order to prevent damage to floors and fixtures;
2. Building Maintenance (45% of times)
- Set up, arrange and remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, staging and scaffolding to prepare facilities for events; such as, meetings, banquets and workshops;
- Monitor Building security and safety by performing such tasks as checking and locking doors after operating hours, checking electrical appliances use to ensure that hazards are not created and listening for any unusual sounds, such as water running somewhere, scratching or voices in areas that should have already been vacated;
- Lock and unlock doors and alarm systems;
- Perform general maintenance on VAFCS building; such as, carpentry, plumbing and painting repairs;
- Move heavy furniture, equipment and supplies;
- Change lights and make other minor electrical repairs;
- Inspect and perform minor repairs to boilers, water tanks, sewage area and other equipment;
- Maintain plumbing and heating systems;
- Ensure conservation measures are followed with reusing, recycle and reducing waste;
- Identify and control risks; for example, locking all doors and windows;
- Ensure recreation gymnasium facilities are cleaned on a daily basis;
- Placing and pulling up the gymnasium floor coverings;
- Operate cleaning equipment;
- Set up facilities for special events, meetings or workshops; such as setting up stacking tables and chairs in accordance with design plan;
- Mow and trim the front and daycare lawn areas and shrubbery using lawn mowers, hand and power tools, and cleaning debris from grounds;
- Painting and minor repairs; and
- Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways and parking areas, using shovels and spreading snow melting chemicals.
3. Report Writing (5% of time)
- Keeping a daily journal of activities performed;
- Notify the Director of Operations concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems;
- Provide Director of Operations with time sheets;
- Requisition supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties;
- Maintain stock and inventory control;
- Listing any larger maintenance issues; such as, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, roofing, flooring or any other larger building issues; and
- Incident reports of activities; such as, drunkenness, abuse of facilities, fighting, police, fire, emergency or any other unusual activities.
3. Other
- Assisting the elders with carrying, bringing in and out food bank and handing them out;
- Providing coffee and tea;
- Providing coffee for walk-ins; and
- Other related duties as it would apply to the general overall operations of the VAFCS.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school graduation or GED
- Minimum 2 years building maintenance experience
- Criminal Records Check with vulnerable sector
- Class 5 Driver's License
- Building Services Worker Certificate
- Understanding of relevant policies, procedures and rules;
- Knowledge of VAFCS programs and services and related maintenance requirements;
- Basic knowledge of maintenance and repairs of plumbing, heating systems, boiler inspection and sewage systems;
- Understanding of the urban aboriginal cultural and political environment; and
- Knowledge of emergency procedures, First Aid and CPR Skills;
- Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills;

All staff are governed by the collective agreement between the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society and the B.C. Government Employees Union.
Physical Demands
The VAFCS maintenance department is a physically strenuous position. You will be expected to lift, carry and manage equipment and supplies within acceptable limits. You may have to work odd or long hours at a time to complete special requests or projects or to participate in or coordinate evening and off hour activities.
