Mechanical Engineering Manager

This position plays a key role of designing mechanical systems in residential, commercial and industrial buildings to deliver energy saving, safe, and cost-effective solutions to clients. Manage project activities from conception to completion. Responsible to sign and seal government documents and drawings which require a seal by a P.Eng. Other duties will fall under the direction of the Mechanical Engineering Manager on a project-by-project basis.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Responsible to oversee the day-to-day operations of KD Mechanical; including staff and client management, budgets and schedules and reporting.
Review shop drawings, codes and obtain preliminary approvals where appropriate.
Responsible to develop and maintain ongoing system engineering concepts (QA/QC), related to mechanical engineering, for KD Mechanical.
Lead the development of quality production and service standards for KD Mechanical and ensure compliance.
Provide technical and professional leadership to members of multi-discipline design teams.
Oversee the project life cycle from preliminary design through to project turnover.
Participate in pre-design meetings with clients in order to provide timely input on anticipated mechanical schemes.
As required, perform mechanical engineering design and construction services on projects encompassing, but not limited to, the following:
Prepare calculation and perform design requirements for Building Permit/Tender/Construction contract documents.
Coordinate mechanical designs and documents with other disciplines.
During the construction phase of the project prepare site instructions, proposed change notices, review shop drawings, conduct site reviews, and attend site meetings as required, or delegate to a project manager.
Perform peer review of contract documents for completeness prior to issuance for Building Permit/Tender/Construction.
Ensure schedule of tasks are done for each project and that projects are completed within budgeted hours, or delegate to a project manager.
Responsible for preparing mechanical engineering budgets and schedules.
Develop, maintain, and manage relationships with clients, industry leaders, architects, engineers, contractors, etc.
Responsible for the preparation of fee proposals for mechanical related aspects of a project.
Responsible for the recruitment, mentorship, performance, and management of KD Mechanical employees. Become an active member on approved boards and associations. Perform and teach construction administration:
Attending field reviews
Reviewing shop drawings
Preparing site instructions and change orders
Reviewing pricing and alternate design options
Coordinate with other disciplines including but not limited to architects, interior designers, mechanical engineers, structural engineers, etc.
Coordinate with utility providers to provide services to site Attend client meetings and liaise with clients and colleagues.
Follow company standards and protocols.
Provide feedback to management on areas of improvement.
Conduct oneself with professionalism.
Provide technical mentorship and leadership for electrical engineering.
Keep apprised of industry and technical trends.
Demonstrate and share experience and expertise in various electrical design fields.
Provide leadership in quality, process and technical standards.
Provide leadership in advancing standards, protocols, procedures, etc.
Perform peer reviews.
Aid in additional managerial tasks as requested on a case-by-case basis (e.g. vacations).
Responsible to stamp and act as the Engineer of Record.


A Bachelors in Engineering specializing in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Technology with a P.Eng Designation.
Minimum of 8+ years of experience in the HVAC industry.
Operating knowledge of Revit and AutoCAD is required.
Experience with energy modeling and load calculation programs are required.
Solid understanding of building science, heat transfer, thermodynamics and airflow fundamentals.
Solid knowledge of NFPA, NECB and ASHRAE standards, local building code and National Plumbing Code.
Strong knowledge of cooling calculation programs such as HAP or Trace7oo is an asset.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Strong knowledge of MS Office.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
A valid driver's license.
