Foundry Engineer/Metallurgist

Demir Engineering has an exciting opportunity within the Edmonton office, seeking a “Foundry Engineer/Metallurgist”. This position will be an integral member to our engineering team and be responsible for providing metallurgical engineering expertise and managing assigned projects for in-house or sales projects within the engineering department. In addition, in collaboration with the manufacturing team, this position will handle assigned manufacturing projects.
TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES.
- Responsible for carrying out and managing all metallurgical aspects of research and development projects.
- Determine and Design all required metallurgical processes for in-house and customer projects including molten metal treatment and metal casting processes.
- Developing metallurgical and practical aspects of molten metal treatment and refining including vacuum degassing, decarburizing, ductile iron treatment, In-stream Cast Alloying (ICA).
- Determine and design all gating and risering required for sound castings.
- Utilize MAGMA software to verify and optimize casting patterns.
- Participating and providing expertise to engineering team for foundry engineering purposes.
- Work as a team with engineering team to design and build tools and equipment required for in-house foundry and manufacturing operation.
- Provide engineering team with engineering expertise to design tools and equipment for customer projects.
- Lend a hand and provide help to engineering and production teams as per request.
- Cooperate with Engineering team and Quality Assurance Manager to maintain and satisfy company QMS.
- Responsible for keeping the production environment safe, clean, and well maintained. Take timely action to correct unsafe work conditions.
- Attend training and courses to keep up with emerging technologies.
- Other responsibilities may be assigned by the manager.
REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION
- Certificate, diploma or degree in Materials or Metallurgical Engineering, Materials technology, or related discipline. MSc preferred.
- Registered with APEGA, ASET or eligible for certification is a preference.
- 5+ years of experience working in a foundry or in the metal casting industry is required.
- 5+ years of CAD experience, including 3D modeling and standardized drafting practices with SolidWorks or other similar software in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Experience working with casting simulation software (MAGMA or similar) is an asset.
- Knowledge of casting methods including gravity casting, centrifugal casting, and vacuum casting are required.
- Experience with steel, iron, aluminum, and/or copper alloys is an asset.
- Experience working in a manufacturing shop or industrial site environment where safety protocols are followed.
- Able to work in all environmental conditions and weather.
- Able to work with a team in high paced environment and set priorities.
- Highly motivated and self-directed capable of multi-tasking and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to quickly build relationships with relevant parties.
