Overview
The Survey & Geomatics Technologist serves as the District's primary internal survey resource, providing technical survey support to the Engineering, Construction, and Operations departments. This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and completing a wide range of survey activities, including design surveys, construction layout, record documentation, property boundary identification, and spatial data collection.
Supporting the full lifecycle of District infrastructure projects, the role combines field surveying, construction support, geomatics technology, spatial data management, contractor coordination, and technical troubleshooting to deliver accurate and reliable survey information for planning, construction, and operational decision-making.
Working with a high degree of independence, the incumbent is responsible for organizing and prioritizing survey activities, managing competing departmental requests, and ensuring survey equipment, workflows, and data are maintained to support efficient operations.
Responsibilities
Scope of Responsibility and Decision-Making
· Act as the District's primary survey resource and provide technical expertise related to survey methods, equipment, data collection, and field procedures.
· Independently plan, schedule, and prioritize survey activities to support Engineering, Construction, and Operations requirements.
· Determine appropriate survey methods, equipment, and workflows based on project requirements and field conditions.
· Review field information, identifies discrepancies, and provides recommendations to support project decisions and construction activities.
· Coordinate with contractors and external service providers to ensure survey-related work is completed accurately and meets District requirements.
· Maintain responsibility for the accuracy, organization, and reliability of survey data used for design, construction, record keeping, and operational purposes.
· Participate in the District's safety program and comply with applicable safety policies, procedures, training, and documentation requirements
Survey and Field Operations
· Perform a range of surveying activities to support engineering design, construction, infrastructure planning, and asset management.
· Provide survey support to Operations and Maintenance, including survey-grade measurements and technical assistance with infrastructure locating when required.
· Perform property boundary identification for District purposes, including fencing and right-of-way clarification.
· Prepare and maintain accurate field notes, photographs, survey records, drawing mark-ups, construction documentation and as-built documentation in accordance with established requirements.
Survey Technology and Data Management
· Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot Trimble GPS/GNSS survey equipment and related technologies, including construction machine control systems.
· Provide technical support and troubleshooting related to GPS equipment and survey workflows.
· Manage, process, and maintain survey and spatial data using industry software, including Trimble Access and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
· Provide supplemental drafting support using AutoCAD Civil 3D and related software when required to support Engineering workloads and District priorities.
· Utilize drone technology and other field data collection methods, following applicable best practices, for site documentation, progress monitoring, and infrastructure information collection.
· Support the integration of survey data with district mapping, engineering drawings, infrastructure records and asset management systems.
· Evaluate, implement, and support survey technologies and workflows that improve the efficiency and accuracy of District field operations.
Project Coordination and Contractor Support
· Read and interpret engineering drawings, survey plans, legal plans, and technical documentation.
· Coordinate, schedule, and monitor external survey-related contractors, including hydrovac services and third-party survey providers.
· Inspect and verify contractor work meets District requirements and specifications.
· Coordinate with internal departments, contractors, and landowners support successful project delivery.
· Collaborate with the Construction and Maintenance Manager, Construction Foreman, and other District staff to provide survey support for construction, maintenance, and infrastructure activities.
Required Skills & Qualifications
· Proficiency with GPS/GNSS survey equipment, data collection software, and related survey data collection workflows.
· Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D, including importing survey data, creating and editing surfaces and alignments, and developing survey drawings, with the ability to further develop proficiency as required.
· Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, survey plans, legal plans, and construction documentation.
· Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize competing requests and work independently.
· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
· Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate professionally with internal departments, contractors, and landowners.
· Ability to coordinate external contractors, conduct field inspections, and verify completed work meets District requirements.
Valid Class 5 driver's licence and demonstrated ability to safely operate District vehicles, including a survey truck and ATV; maintain vehicle cleanliness, safe condition, and operational readiness; and identify and report maintenance or mechanical issues as required.
Education & Experience
· Diploma or degree in Geomatics, Survey Technology, or a related discipline.
· Registered as, or eligible for registration as, a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) through ASET.
· Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible surveying experience, including experience supporting engineering design, construction, infrastructure, or other civil projects.
· Experience with pipeline surveying, earthworks surveying, as-built documentation, municipal or irrigation infrastructure, and familiarity with agricultural operations considered an asset.
· Experience operating drones for surveying, mapping, inspection, or other field applications is considered an asset.
Working Conditions
· Combination of office and field-based work, including independent field assignments throughout the district.
· Regular operation of District vehicles and ATV to access project sites and perform field activities.
· Work in and around canals, reservoirs, pipelines, and other irrigation infrastructure, with exposure to heavy equipment, uneven terrain, and varying weather conditions.
