Position Summary
The Chief Engineer is responsible for the overall maintenance, repair, safety, and operation of the hotel's physical plant and building systems for our 248-room dual-branded Hyatt Place & Hyatt House property. This leadership role ensures a safe, comfortable, and well-maintained environment for guests and associates while maximizing equipment reliability, operational efficiency, sustainability, and regulatory compliance.
The Chief Engineer leads the Engineering and Maintenance team and works closely with hotel leadership to support guest satisfaction, asset protection, preventive maintenance programs, capital improvement projects, and brand standards.
Key ResponsibilitiesEngineering Operations & Maintenance
- Direct all engineering, maintenance, and facilities operations for the hotel.
- Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive preventive maintenance program for guestrooms, public areas, back-of-house spaces, and building systems.
- Oversee maintenance and repair of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, life-safety, fire protection, kitchen, laundry, pool, and building automation systems.
- Ensure prompt resolution of maintenance requests and guest room work orders.
- Monitor equipment performance and implement corrective actions to minimize downtime.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, logs, equipment inventories, and asset documentation.
Team Leadership
- Recruit, train, coach, schedule, and evaluate engineering associates.
- Foster a culture of accountability, safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Ensure team members are trained on Hyatt standards, safety procedures, and technical best practices.
- Establish departmental goals and performance expectations.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all federal, provincial, and local regulations, including occupational health and safety requirements.
- Oversee fire life-safety systems, emergency preparedness programs, and incident response procedures.
- Conduct regular inspections and audits to identify and mitigate safety risks.
- Ensure all required permits, certifications, testing, and inspections are completed on schedule.
- Maintain compliance with Hyatt brand standards and property operating procedures.
Financial Management
- Develop and manage the engineering department budget.
- Control departmental expenses and monitor utility consumption.
- Identify opportunities for cost savings, energy efficiency, and sustainability initiatives.
- Obtain competitive bids, negotiate contracts, and manage relationships with vendors and service providers.
- Participate in capital expenditure planning and asset preservation strategies.
Property Improvement & Project Management
- Lead renovation, refurbishment, and capital improvement projects.
- Coordinate contractors and external service providers to ensure quality work and minimal disruption to hotel operations.
- Provide recommendations regarding equipment replacement, upgrades, and facility improvements.
Guest Service
- Support a guest-centric culture by ensuring all facilities are maintained to the highest standards.
- Respond professionally and effectively to guest concerns related to engineering and maintenance issues.
- Collaborate with all departments to deliver exceptional guest experiences.
QualificationsRequired
- Minimum 5 years of progressive engineering or maintenance leadership experience in hotels, resorts, or comparable facilities.
- Minimum 2 years in a supervisory or management role.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and building systems.
- Experience with preventive maintenance programs and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and fire life-safety systems.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs as needed.
Preferred
- Hotel engineering experience within a branded full-service, select-service, or extended-stay environment.
- Experience managing dual-branded hotel operations.
- Trade certification in electrical, HVAC, refrigeration, or related discipline.
- Building Environmental Systems (BES) certification or equivalent.
- Knowledge of Hyatt systems and brand standards.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb ladders, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work in mechanical rooms, rooftops, confined spaces, and other maintenance environments.
- Ability to respond to emergency situations at any time while on duty or on call.

Pay: $67,000.00-$70,000.00 per year
