TOK Group is seeking a Transit Bus HVAC Technician to join our York Region Transit (YRT) Fleet Maintenance team. This role is responsible for the seasonal maintenance, preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of HVAC systems on New Flyer and Nova Bus transit vehicles. This is a non-licensed position — the successful candidate will complete a structured 8–12 week in-house training program covering HVAC fundamentals, transit-specific systems, refrigerant handling, and safety compliance. Candidates do not require a 310T licence but would be preferred. ODP certified and automotive HVAC experience would be beneficial. TOK Group may sponsor high-performing technicians toward 310T apprenticeship after demonstrated competency.
What You'll Do
· Diagnose and repair HVAC system faults on heavy-duty transit buses — rooftop and underbody units across New Flyer and Nova Bus platforms (Thermo King, Sutrak, Spheros, Transtec)
· Investigate common failure scenarios — no heat/no cooling complaints, intermittent operation, poor airflow, short cycling, and high/low pressure faults — and use pressure-temperature readings to pinpoint the cause
· Run full seasonal changeovers: cooling-season readiness in spring/summer and heating-system checks in fall/winter, including heater core inspection, coolant system checks, and air distribution dampers and actuators
· Complete scheduled preventive maintenance inspections — belt checks, compressor oil levels, electrical connection torque, filter replacement — and keep accurate, timely records in our M5 asset management system
· Handle refrigerant recovery, evacuation, and recharge by weight or by superheat/subcooling, in compliance with environmental regulations (once ODP-certified)
· Detect and repair refrigerant leaks using electronic detectors, UV dye, and bubble-testing methods, and replace fittings, O-rings, hoses, and lines as needed
· Troubleshoot HVAC electrical circuits — thermostats, temperature sensors, pressure switches, relays, contactors, control boards — and test compressor, fan, and blower motors
· Replace major components such as compressors, condensers, and evaporators, and commission the system afterward to confirm proper operation
· Work safely at heights exceeding 3 metres accessing rooftop HVAC units, following lockout/tagout and fall-protection procedures on every job
· Escalate complex diagnostic, warranty, or compliance issues to senior technicians or the Shop Supervisor when needed
What We're Looking For
· Mechanical aptitude — automotive, diesel, HVAC, or heavy-equipment background all welcome
· Comfortable working at heights and in a shop environment
· Valid G driver's licence with a clean abstract
· Willingness to complete mandatory safety certifications (ODP, WHMIS, Working at Heights, Lockout/Tagout, Basic OH&S) — fully paid for and arranged by TOK Group
· No HVAC experience required — we'll teach you from the ground up
Nice to Have
· Prior HVAC or refrigeration exposure
· Interest in pursuing a 310T apprenticeship (we sponsor top performers)
· Transit or fleet maintenance experience
Why TOK Group
· Fully funded training and certification
· Possible 310T apprenticeship sponsorship for candidates who show strong competency
· Growing electric bus fleet means growing opportunities in EV HVAC systems
· Competitive wage, benefits package, and stable, full-time hours
