The Ferme d’éducation et de recherche du Campus d’Alfred (FERCA) is the only organic dairy farm dedicated to research and knowledge transfer in Canada. We help dairy farmers and organic growers to use evidence-based approaches and practices to effectively overcome their challenges. For our industrial and institutional partners, we offer various services to carry out applied research projects in our facilities. FERCA is looking for a bilingual person to join its dairy production team to fill the position of farm manager.

Job description

Dairy production

  • Plan and manage all activities and daily operations performed on the farm
  • Supervise the overall management of the certified organic dairy herd in collaboration with the herdman/woman
  • Plan, organize and distribute work in the dairy production team
  • Coach, supervise and support the dairy production team (herdperson, milkers, herd care attendants)
  • Establish action plans, disseminate standard operating procedures (SOPs) and identify priorities to maximize dairy productivity
  • Plan, control and coordinate crop production, including operations related to soil preparation, seeds, harvest, etc.
  • Plan and control purchasing inputs for crop production (fertilizers, biopesticides, seeds) and dairy production (feeds, grains, hay, minerals)
  • In collaboration with the herdman/woman, supervise animal health care and the use of veterinary products, write notes and verify animal health records
  • Perform or assign maintenance and repairs of equipment and buildings
  • Milk dairy cows occasionally
  • Operate farm machinery
  • Respond to alarms and requests for critical assistance from employees

Applied research and training

  • Run specific applied research activities on animal, pastures or field crops, in collaboration with the research and training coordinator
  • Participate in training activities, in collaboration with the research and training coordinator
  • Attends animal ethics and animal care policies/committee
  • Identify activities, training and knowledge transfer needs in dairy and organic farming

Requirements and qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in dairy production, animal production, agriculture or agronomy
  • Experience in dairy production is a major asset
  • Knowledge and experience in organic management is a major asset
  • Sense of organization and innovation
  • Change management skills
  • Good oral and written communication skills (English and French)

Salary and benefits

Annual salary between 46 800$ à 60 840$
