Your role as estimator
- Own the estimate desk: Take full ownership of commercial project estimates — from reviewing drawings and specifications through to final bid assembly and submission.
- Perform material take-offs: Accurately quantify materials and costs, building detailed Excel-based models and maintaining estimating software with precision.
- Source competitive pricing: Communicate with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain current, competitive pricing for equipment and materials.
- Review subcontractor bids: Assess sub-trade bids for capability, scope gaps, and risk — and mitigate any gaps before they become field problems.
- Produce PCN pricing and clarifications: Prepare and submit clarifications and PCN pricing for projects as required; obtain bid bonds and surety documents when needed.
- Lead a junior estimator: Supervise and develop a Junior Estimator, building a high-performance estimating function for the commercial department.
- Attend site visits and meetings: Get on-site when it matters and meet with project foremen to ensure estimates reflect real-world conditions.
- Collaborate with leadership: Participate in estimating manager reviews — bringing accuracy, accountability, and commercial insight to every assignment.
What you bring to the table
- Previous experience in an estimating or project management role, preferably within the plumbing and heating industry
- Strong analytical skills with an exceptional eye for detail
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and estimating software
- Excellent communication skills — comfortable with contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal leadership
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple competing deadlines effectively
- Ability to work independently with minimal oversight and collaboratively as part of a team
