Salary Scale: $27.50-$31.50/hour
Work Hours: 37.5 hours/week

The Family Advocate is a member of the Community Healing & Wellness team and works with participants and families who are involved with Child and Family Services through individual work and advocacy to support them to better understand their case plans and work towards completing them. The Family Advocate will work towards reducing the number of children entering foster homes, increasing placements with family members and will assist with quicker reunification with families. The Family Advocate will assist families in advocating for themselves and their families.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary degree or certificate in the social services field and/or Inner-City Studies. A combination of education and experience will be considered
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to experiences of parents in the child welfare system
- Ability to practice participant-centered work and to work from a trauma-informed approach
- Excellent advocacy skills and in-depth knowledge of the child welfare system
- Experience working collaboratively with community organizations
- Experience working in a community-based organization that values harm reduction
- Excellent interpersonal communication and conflict management skills
- Professional and responsible with sensitive and confidential issues
- Strong writing and computer skills; ability to prepare reports, letters, forms and evaluation tools
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Strong attention to detail and follow-up
- Experience providing support to participant, and/or families who have experienced domestic violence
- Experience in the development, organization, and facilitation of group programming
- Experience working with families from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Experience working in a community-based setting in the North End of Winnipeg

- Knowledge of the resources available in the community to participant experiencing poverty, homelessness, domestic violence, and/or problematic substance use
- Knowledge of the impacts that colonization, residential schools, the 60’s scoop, the child welfare system and the attempted genocide of Indigenous peoples, has had on their culture and language and sacred traditions.
- Knowledge of positive parenting, healthy parent child relationships, and healthy child development
- Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills
- Non-judgemental and accepting attitude
- Competent computer and administrative skills
- Ability to deal with crisis situations in an appropriate manner

Direct Service Responsibilities
- To provide support and advocacy for participant and families with CFS involvement with the main priority being reunification of families
- Collect documentation for case planning with participant in collaboration with various agencies
- Attend court with participants as needed
- Work collaboratively with other agencies to support the participant
- Assist with linking participants and families with other services and programs in the community
Community Support Team Responsibilities
- To participate in Community Healing and Wellness team Meetings and group debriefing sessions
- To participate in the planning and development of the Community Healing and Wellness team’s annual Workplan
Administrative Duties
- To maintain participant files as outlined in the Employee Policy and Procedure Manual
- To prepare and submit monthly activity reports to the Community Healing and Wellness Manager
- To participate in staff meetings as time permits
- To participate in relevant training opportunities as required
- To participate in annual performance reviews
- To attend community events and meetings and to sit on community committees as appropriate
- Other duties as assigned, consistent with this job description and approved by Centre policies, procedures, and Executive Director

· Must Have a valid driver’s license and a reliable access to a vehicle.
