About the Role
Reporting to the Construction Manager, the Civil Superintendent will be responsible for leading all field execution activities related to civil construction scopes including earthworks, concrete, underground utilities, and associated industrial infrastructure.
The successful candidate will oversee site activities, coordinate labour and subcontractors, ensure compliance with safety and quality standards, and work collaboratively with project teams to achieve successful project outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Site Leadership & Project Execution
- Lead and coordinate daily field execution activities for industrial civil construction scopes.
- Oversee civil work activities including earthworks, grading, underground utilities, structural concrete, and foundations.
- Ensure all work is executed in accordance with drawings, specifications, schedules, and quality requirements.
- Review and interpret IFC drawings, shop drawings, rebar drawings, and project specifications.
- Develop and maintain look-ahead schedules and short-term construction plans.
- Coordinate labour, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and site logistics.
- Monitor productivity and construction progress while proactively identifying risks and constraints.
- Participate in constructability reviews and project planning activities.
Safety & Quality Leadership
- Promote and maintain a strong safety culture across all project activities.
- Ensure compliance with site-specific safety programs, corporate policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct site inspections, safety meetings, and hazard assessments.
- Monitor concrete and soils testing results and ensure corrective action is taken when required.
- Ensure all work meets quality requirements, specifications, and applicable standards.
Stakeholder & Team Management
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and support to field personnel and subcontractors.
- Foster a collaborative, respectful, and high-performing site culture.
- Interface professionally with clients, consultants, inspectors, unions, and regulatory authorities.
- Collaborate with Project Management, Project Controls, Engineering, Quality, and Safety teams.
- Support change management, risk mitigation, and issue resolution activities.
Qualifications Required
- Minimum 5+ years of construction leadership experience within industrial, heavy civil, infrastructure, or related environments.
- Proven experience leading field crews on industrial or civil construction projects.
- Strong experience with civil construction scopes including:
- Earthworks
- Underground utilities
- Structural concrete
- Civil infrastructure
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Strong understanding of construction sequencing, productivity, and field execution.
- Proven ability to coordinate multiple work fronts within complex project environments.
- Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong commitment to safety, quality, and team development.
Preferred
- Concrete construction experience including placement, finishing, curing, and quality control.
- Previous experience working on industrial, energy, utility, water, mining, or infrastructure projects.
- Trade certification, Civil Engineering Technology diploma, Construction Management education, or related technical training.
- Previous supervisory, foreperson, or superintendent experience within unionized construction environments.
