Finance Officer, HQ (12 month contract)

Overall Purpose/Broad Function

The overall purpose of the position is to perform the day to day operational accounting function and provide analytical and technical support to the finance and administration unit.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Accounts Payable

Prepares accounts payable entries for MI HQ.

Prepares wires, direct deposits and cheques for HQ payments.

Prepares purchase orders for HQ related purchases.

Corporate Accounting

Creates GL accounts as required.

Prepares invoices and accounts receivable entries (other than donor invoices).

Maintains the capital asset subledgers and manages the inventory of MI assets including asset. database, asset tagging and identifying assets for replacement.

Maintains and reconciles prepaid expenses.

Prepares various month end journal entries including depreciation and prepaid expenses.

Provides guidance and training regarding monthly financial transactions and MI policies and procedures.

Prepares bank reconciliations for HQ bank accounts.

Travel Management

Issues travel authorizations for staff and consultants and maintains TA log.

Reviews travel authorizations and issues advances.

Liaises with insurance broker to ensure appropriate travel insurance coverage for high risk countries.

Reviews and verifies staff travel expense reports submitted.

Updates staff and consultant per diem list on an annual basis.

Reconciles the corporate travel credit card statement.


Assists with in the preparation of various year-end worksheets and account analysis.

Other Responsibilities

Prepares ad hoc reports, analysis and reconciliations as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities


Education/Professional Designations/Experience

College diploma or University degree in accounting, finance or business.

A minimum of three years experience in an accounting environment.

Enrolment in the CPA program considered an asset.

Language Skills

Fluent in English is required. French will be considered an asset.

Demonstrated client service oriented mind set.

Experience with Dynamics GL considered an asset.

Knowledge of international banking practices considered an asset.

This is a 12 month contract. Selected candidates must have current legal entitlement to work in Canada (Permanent Residency, Current Work Permit, Citizenship, NAFTA eligibility or other reciprocal trade agreement).
