Summer Internship in Engineering, Advanced Products and Technology, Rail Testing
CN is currently seeking a creative, open minded, and energetic candidate who is working towards a Bachelors of Science specializing in Electrical, Civil or Engineering Physics for a paid internship in the summer of 2021.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist in the research and development of methods and/or technology to determine the presence of internal defects in rail;
Analyze vendor equipment and solutions, and provide recommendations based on technical merit and field results;
Using theoretical and practical understanding of ultrasonic wave propagation, explore methods and procedures to improve work processes;
Develop test plans for commissioning of potential solutions;
Assist in planning of CN’s internal Rail Flaw Detection (RFD) Program, including inspection frequency, schedules and day-to-day operations;
Assist in the Supervision of RFD contractors and CN’s supporting employees;
Assist in the acquisition of work time for CN’s RFD program through work requests with Regional Operations Centres across Canada;
Liaise between RFD field teams and other CN departments, through the establishment of strong collaborative working relationships;
Review safety procedures and audit RFD teams for safety rules compliance;
Review RFD inspection reports and provide analysis of CN rail infrastructure health, including recommendations for improvements.
Must be 18 years of age
Valid driver's license
Must be a student currently enrolled in a Canadian University and working towards a degree in Electrical, Civil or Engineering Physics.
Familiar with theory and concepts of ultrasonic testing for internal analysis of metals;
Proficient in computers and electronic instrumentation
Strong written and oral communication skills are necessary in English
Ability to communicate, oral or written, in French is an asset
Ability to travel, with minimal notice, anywhere within our Canadian or U.S. operations during the internship (up to 75% of the time)
Ability to work both inside and outside in all types of weather conditions
Ability to pass a background investigation pertaining to criminal history, including driver history.
Work shift work, including nights, weekends and holidays
Combination of office and working outdoors, in varying weather and environmental conditions.
Enforce safe work procedures and policies
Meet deadlines, interface with senior management
Travel for company business, at times without advance notice
Based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Ability to work anywhere in Canada or the United States.
