POSITION: Communications and Marketing Officer

STATUS: Full-time position (37.5 hours per week)

REPORTS TO: Director of Development & Communication

Reporting to the Director of Development & Communications, and working collaboratively as a member of the Fund Development & Communications team, the Communications Officer is responsible for managing both the internal and external Communications activities in support of the organization’s Strategic goals, for developing strategic messaging and marketing strategies, and establishing and monitoring processes that facilitate effective communications that are aligned with the organization’s values and brand.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position works primarily at the Dementia Society’s central office in Ottawa but does involve local travel for interactions with stakeholders as needed and travel throughout Renfrew County may be required. Hours are generally 8.30 a.m. until 4 p.m, with 30 minutes for lunch and the possibility of some minimal work on the weekend.

RESPONSIBILITIES

General

Provides input into the strategic communications and marketing plan

Develops annual operational work-plan to achieve results of strategic com and marketing

Content development and management

Leads in the writing, editing and proofing of press materials, website and newsletter articles

Writes and distributes PSAs, news releases, media advisories

Serves as stories developer and archivist

Manages, updates and ensures adherence to DSORC style guide and brand guidelines

Monitors website to ensure optimal functioning, presentation and Search Engine Optimization

Functions as webmaster by contributing to development and maintenance of a web presence that reflects the organizations values of excellence and accountability

Supervises digital services contract by being the main point of contact and triaging tickets to self or digital service contractor depending on complexity and skill required, and ensuring all aspects of the contract are delivered

Supports teams (Clinical, Education and Fund Development) to achieve their communication goals by preparing or editing copy

Develops and manages the DSORC e-bulletin

Maintains proactive media relations – print/television/radio. including establishing and managing positive relationships with small community publications and maintaining a database of all media contacts

Creates and manages annual calendar for submission of items to media outlets and ensures follow through

Responsible for finding material relevant to the DSORC audience from a variety of sources, and sharing it strategically through internal and external communication channels

Manages French language translation activities

Marketing

Manages creation of promotional materials in various media: banners, flyers, posters, e-blasts, brochures, displays and liaises with Dementia Society staff re timing and content

Maintains library of materials developed

Social Media

In collaboration with the Director Development and Communications, develops and implements a Social Media strategy to identify emerging opportunities and to maximize messaging across social media platforms

Ensures a well-organized photo and video library is maintained and used

Tracks and analyses social media metrics and recommends actions to senior leadership

Creates and manages a detailed calendar

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

University, college education in communications, public relations or a related field

2-5 years related experience

Ability to develop and execute internal and external communication strategies

Understanding of a not-for-profit environment (preferred)

Excellent oral and written communication skills in English (required) and French (preferred)

Analytical and problem-solving skills

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Fluent in navigation of social media sites to develop content, graphic elements, posts, traffic, and interaction

Working knowledge of desktop publishing applications

Strong attention to detail

Editing and proofing skills

Media relations training

Graphic Design experience (desirable)

Ability to work to strict deadlines and manage a multitude of tasks

Flexible

Bilingualism (preferred)
