The Chief Strategy and Innovation office is responsible for developing emerging solutions that have the potential to create substantial incremental revenue for the company. These emerging solutions leverage/adapt new architectures and technologies such as AI, machine learning, data science, security and wireless communications. The emerging solutions teams consists of product managers, architects and development teams, working as an agile unit, and collaborating with our core products, services and software organizations.

Job Description

The Sr. Director of Software Engineering - Emerging Solutions will lead the development teams to define, architect, and develop multiple emerging solutions simultaneously. This role will be an Agile development champion with a particular focus on customer-centric and design-led product engineering. More specifically, the objectives for the role are:
Engage in Defining Emerging Solutions: Work closely with the Strategy Office to represent the engineering perspective in defining new emerging solutions
Lead Effective Engineering Execution: Develop the right skills, processes, and culture to ensure the successful development of an emerging solution
Facilitate Commercialization: Work closely with various business units to smoothly transition validated emerging solutions for continued development and productization
Be The Agile Champion: Provide mentorship to the team as they become effective practitioners of Agile Development
In addition to the Company’s capabilities, emerging solutions will leverage the CTO’s core competencies in AI, sensors and systems, human factors, user experience design, and industrial design. The Director of Engineering, Emerging Solutions will work closely with the teams developing these competencies to create customer-focused, differentiated solutions that have significant revenue potential for the Company. Validating the potential of an emerging solution requires fast, iterative development cycles with regular customer feedback. Successive iterations need to go beyond the realm of a prototype to one of a mission-critical product that can be deployed by a customer. The public safety and security nature of many of our solutions requires particular attention to high availability, cybersecurity, and privacy. Our drive for continuous innovation and partnership with our customers enables them to be ready – in the day-to-day moments and in the moments that matter most.

Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree is required, Masters Degree is a plus; Emphasis in Engineering, Computer Science or related field
5+ years of demonstrated experience simultaneously leading multiple diverse projects with complex requirements and challenging timelines
Experience with AI, machine learning, and/or data science solution development strongly preferred
Experience with both practicing and customizing Agile development methodologies, including experience leading projects with multiple scrum teams
Experience with short release cycles, the full software lifecycle, and experience working on B2B and B2C products
Ability to be proactive and comfortable iteratively transforming minimal specifications to well-defined requirements and development goals
Experience in managing engineering operations, including budget planning
Experience in hiring, retaining, and mentoring smart, talented engineers
Knowledge of professional software engineering best practices including coding standards, code reviews, SCM, CI, build processes, testing, and operations
Strong verbal and written communication skills, organizational and time management skills
Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and product management to understand requirements, describe software product features, and technical designs
