We are a new and growing Surrey law firm looking for an experienced Paralegal to join our founding team.
This is not simply an opportunity to step into an existing role. You will have the chance to help shape how a new firm operates, contribute to the systems and culture we build, and become a key member of the team from the beginning.
Our practice includes family law, criminal law, and wills & estates, with the majority of this position focused on supporting our family law practice. We are looking for someone who understands the demands of a busy legal practice, takes ownership of their work, and wants to be part of a collaborative team delivering excellent work for its clients.
The Role
You will work closely with our lawyers and take an active role in the day-to-day management and progression of client files.
The ideal candidate has meaningful family law experience, strong knowledge of court processes and procedures, and the confidence to manage files and deadlines with a high degree of independence.
While family law experience is strongly preferred, there will also be opportunities to assist with criminal law and wills & estates matters as the firm grows.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft and prepare court documents, pleadings, applications, affidavits, correspondence, and other legal materials
- Prepare and organize materials for hearings, applications, conferences, mediations, and trials
- Manage files from opening through resolution, including maintaining organized and accurate electronic records
- Track court dates, deadlines, limitation periods, undertakings, and follow-up requirements
- Prepare financial disclosure and assist with document production and organization in family law matters
- Communicate professionally and compassionately with clients
- Liaise with opposing counsel, court registries, experts, and other third parties
- Assist lawyers with trial and hearing preparation, including briefs, document books, chronologies, and supporting materials
- Proactively identify outstanding items, deadlines, and next steps on files
- Assist with improving workflows, precedents, systems, and processes as we build the firm
- Provide support across practice areas when needed
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for someone who is experienced, dependable, and comfortable taking ownership of their work.
The strongest candidates will have:
- Previous paralegal experience, ideally in family law
- Strong knowledge of BC court procedures and filing requirements
- Experience drafting family law court materials and legal correspondence
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- The ability to manage multiple active files and competing deadlines
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Good judgment and the ability to work independently
- Confidence dealing directly with clients and other legal professionals
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and legal practice-management/document-management technology
- A practical, solutions-oriented approach to their work
- A collaborative attitude and willingness to contribute beyond a narrowly defined job description
Experience in criminal law or wills & estates is an asset, but not required.
The Kind of Person Who Will Thrive Here
You may be a good fit if you:
- Take pride in producing accurate, high-quality work
- Prefer being trusted to manage your responsibilities rather than being micromanaged
- Anticipate what needs to happen next instead of waiting to be asked
- Communicate openly when priorities or workloads need to be adjusted
- Care about the client experience as much as the technical work
- Enjoy working closely with lawyers and being treated as an important part of the file team
- Want to help build better systems rather than simply inherit “the way things have always been done”
- Value professionalism without unnecessary hierarchy or formality
Why Join Us? Help Build the Firm
You will be joining at an early stage, which means your ideas will genuinely matter.
We want the person in this role to help us develop our precedents, workflows, technology, client-service processes, and internal systems. As the firm grows, there will be opportunities for the role to grow with it.
A Culture Built Intentionally
We believe excellent legal work and a healthy workplace should coexist.
We are building a firm around high standards, collaboration, respect, accountability, and work-life balance. We want people to do excellent work without creating a culture where unnecessary urgency and burnout are treated as signs of commitment.
Meaningful Responsibility
We want an experienced paralegal who can become a trusted member of the legal team.
You will work directly with multiple lawyers, have meaningful involvement in files, and be given the autonomy appropriate to your experience and abilities.
Compensation
The anticipated salary range for this position is $55,000–$90,000 per year, depending on experience, qualifications, and the level of responsibility the successful candidate is able to take on.
Work Arrangement & Location
This is a full-time, in-person position based in Surrey, British Columbia.
During the firm's initial onboarding and training period, the role will temporarily operate on a remote/hybrid basis while the firm's office and operations are being established. The successful candidate should be comfortable working remotely during this period and attending in-person meetings, training, and work sessions as required.
Once the firm's Surrey office is fully operational, this position will transition to a regular in-office role. Candidates should therefore be prepared to work from the Surrey office on a full-time basis following the initial onboarding period.
