Position Summary
The Commissioning Coordinator / C&SU Lead is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing commissioning activities for operational systems on large-scale heavy oil and SAGD facilities. This role works closely with Operations, Construction, Engineering, and Contractors to ensure safe, efficient, and successful transition from mechanical completion through commissioning, start-up, and handover to Operations. The successful candidate will provide leadership in commissioning execution while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and operational readiness.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate commissioning activities with Operations Leads to achieve project commissioning objectives and milestones.
- Develop, implement, and execute commissioning plans for operational systems.
- Prepare and maintain commissioning, operational, and start-up procedures.
- Coordinate Mechanical Completion (MC) walkdowns to achieve timely completion of construction systems.
- Monitor and follow up on critical commissioning and construction scope to support project schedules.
- Manage the transition from Mechanical Completion to Commissioning, ensuring effective implementation of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Safe Work Permits (SWP), hazardous energy management, and other safe work processes.
- Participate in and support Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR), operational walkdowns, and system readiness assessments.
- Coordinate with Construction, Operations, Engineering, and Contractors to ensure safe and efficient commissioning activities.
- Support turnaround planning and execution by coordinating multiple contractors while maintaining safe work practices.
- Perform additional project-related duties as required to support commissioning and start-up activities.
Qualifications & Experience
- 15–20 years of operational experience in the oil and gas industry, with preference for experience in SAGD facilities and heavy bitumen processing plants.
- Demonstrated experience as a Commissioning & Start-Up (C&SU) Lead or Commissioning Coordinator on large capital projects.
- Extensive knowledge of oil and gas safety standards and safe work practices, including:
- Safe Work Permits (SWP)
- Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
- Gas Monitoring
- Hazardous Energy Management
- Construction and Commissioning Safety Coordination
- Experience coordinating turnaround activities involving multiple contractors and work groups.
- Strong understanding of process operations, system scoping, Mechanical Completion, Construction, and Commissioning system interfaces.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam, and Commissioning Management Software.
- Minimum Third Class Power Engineering Certificate from an ABSA-recognized institution.
- Strong communication, coordination, planning, and leadership skills with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary project teams.
