Our client is a growing HealthTech organization seeking a Senior Accountant (Payroll) to support payroll accounting, employment tax compliance, and complex compensation programs across multiple entities. This role will lead the implementation of a new multi-entity payroll system and drive integration with the HRIS platform, partnering closely with Finance and HR teams. The ideal candidate brings strong payroll accounting expertise, systems implementation experience, and a passion for building scalable, compliant processes in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities of the Senior Accountant is as follows but not limited to:
Core Accounting & Month-End Close
- Own payroll journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations as part of the monthly, quarterly, and annual close cycle.

Prepare payroll-related account reconciliations and supporting schedules, including salaries payable, benefits, and accrued vacation.

Maintain general ledger integrity for all payroll and compensation accounts in accordance with Canadian GAAP (ASPE).

Assist the Finance Lead, Transformation with financial statements, variance analysis, and payroll cost reporting.
Global Payroll, Taxation & Regulatory Compliance

Manage payroll tax filings and remittances including CPP, EI, income tax, and employer health tax (EHT) across all provinces.

Prepare and file T4s, T4As, ROEs, and other statutory year-end payroll filings accurately and on time.

Support HST/GST, corporate tax, and other regulatory filings by providing accurate payroll data and schedules.

Monitor legislative changes to payroll taxation and ensure compliance across all operating jurisdictions.

Liaise with CRA and provincial agencies on payroll tax inquiries, audits, or remittance discrepancies.

Manage global payroll operations across multiple jurisdictions, including Canadian employees, US full-time employees, and offshore contractors in various countries.

Oversee US payroll accounting and tax compliance for full-time employees, including federal and state withholdings, W-2 filings, and coordination with US payroll providers.

Manage financial accounting and payment workflows for offshore contractors, including contractor classification, foreign currency payments, withholding tax considerations, and 1099/NEC or equivalent filings.

Ensure cross-border payroll intercompany charges, transfer pricing considerations, and permanent establishment risks are identified and escalated appropriately.

Partner with external advisors and global payroll providers to maintain compliance in each operating jurisdiction and support future country expansions.
Complex & Variable Compensation Accounting

Account for complex compensation structures including bonuses, commissions, retroactive pay, off-cycle runs, and equity-based compensation (stock options, RSUs).

Maintain schedules and calculations for variable pay programs, ensuring accurate accrual and payout accounting.

Partner with HR and People Operations to model, cost, and account for new compensation programs or plan changes.

Support accounting for employee benefits, group insurance, and RRSP/DPSP matching contributions.
Payroll System Implementation & Process Optimization

Play a key role in the end-to-end implementation of a new multi-entity payroll system, including scoping, vendor evaluation, configuration, parallel testing, and go-live support.

Define entity-level payroll accounting requirements and ensure the new system supports separate legal entity reporting, intercompany allocations, and consolidated payroll financials.

Lead the integration between the new payroll system and the HRIS platform, ensuring accurate bi-directional data flow for employee records, compensation changes, and headcount reporting.

Collaborate with IT, HR, and Finance to map and validate data migration from legacy payroll systems, including historical records, employee master data, and prior-period payroll journals.

Participate in the accounting system (ERP) implementation as the payroll subject matter expert, ensuring payroll GL mappings, cost centre structures, and chart of accounts align with multi-entity reporting needs.

Design and document post-implementation payroll accounting workflows, internal controls, and reconciliation processes to sustain accuracy at scale.

Identify automation opportunities within the payroll-to-finance data flow and drive continuous improvement post go-live.

Act as the primary finance point of contact for payroll-related questions from HR, Operations, and Leadership.

Communicate payroll cost implications clearly to non-finance stakeholders during budgeting, headcount planning, or organizational changes.

Prepare payroll reporting and analysis packages for senior leadership, auditors, and board presentations.

Support year-end audit readiness by preparing payroll documentation, reconciliations, and audit schedules.
Must Have
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA designation (or in progress).

6+ years of progressive full-cycle accounting experience, with at least 3 years in payroll accounting or payroll-related finance roles.

Strong knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation, CRA remittance requirements, and multi-provincial tax rules; working knowledge of US payroll tax obligations and offshore contractor compliance.

Hands-on experience with payroll software (e.g., Dayforce, ADP, Wagepoint, Humi) and ERP systems.

Advanced Excel / Google Sheets skills for payroll modeling and reconciliation.
Nice-to-Have (Strong Plus)
- Experience with equity compensation accounting (stock options, RSUs, phantom equity).

Startup or high-growth company experience.

Experience managing global payroll across multiple countries, with exposure to Employer of Record (EOR) arrangements or global payroll aggregators (e.g., Deel, Remote, Rippling).

Hands-on experience implementing a multi-entity payroll system and/or integrating payroll with an HRIS platform (e.g., Dayforce, ADP, Workday, BambooHR).

Familiarity with ESOP / share-based payment accounting under ASPE or IFRS.
