Senior Joint Venture Accountant

Type: 2-Year Contract (Potential for Extension)
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Joint Venture Accountant to join a well-established oil & gas organization in Calgary. Reporting to the Manager, Finance & Administration, the successful candidate will play a key role in joint venture accounting, financial reporting, system administration, process improvement, and team leadership. Working closely with accounting and operational stakeholders, you will manage non-operated assets, oversee joint venture accounting activities, support audits, maintain financial data integrity, and provide leadership to junior team members. This position is ideal for an accounting professional who combines strong technical JV accounting expertise with financial systems knowledge and leadership capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze Joint Interest Billings (JIBs) and review expenditures against approved budgets, cash calls, and AFEs.
- Record and review JIB transactions, ensuring costs from operators, partners, and vendors are accurate and valid.
- Review accounting entries prepared by accounting team members and ensure financial accuracy.
- Review and process cash calls for non-operated joint ventures.
- Monitor annual work programs, budgets, and JV expenditures.
- Lead month-end close activities including accruals, balance sheet reconciliations, variance analysis, and management reporting.
- Support operator and non-operator joint venture audits and liaise with auditors and business partners.
- Maintain financial system master data including wells, contracts, royalties, fees, and related accounting information.
- Reconcile production and revenue information and ensure data integrity across multiple financial systems.
- Prepare and support regulatory reporting requirements, including royalty and government reporting.
- Draft internal approval documentation and support compliance with Joint Operating Agreements and company policies.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements, automation, and financial system efficiencies.
- Provide mentorship, leadership, and day-to-day direction to a JV Accountant while supporting the broader accounting team.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline.
- CPA, CA, CGA, or CMA designation.
- 6-10+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Minimum 5 years of experience within the Western Canadian oil & gas industry.
- Strong Joint Venture Accounting experience.
- Experience with month-end close, financial reporting, reconciliations, audits, and JV operations.
- Intermediate to advanced Excel skills.
- Previous leadership, coaching, or mentoring experience.
- Strong organizational, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Oracle, P2 Qbyte, and P2 Metrix.
- Experience with financial systems administration, upgrades, configuration, or process automation initiatives.
- Production accounting exposure within the oil & gas industry.
- Experience supporting regulatory reporting and joint venture audits.
