In compliance with the Guidelines set by the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC), legislation outlined by the Ontario Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) and UHN Institutional Guidelines, it is the responsibility of the Supervisor of ARC Site(s) to oversee and provide cost effective measures in terms of daily operations around animal care and animal husbandry for a single or multi-species facility. The ARC Supervisory role provides leadership in effecting change and improving quality of service within the framework of the ARC department’s program. This position must provide clear communication to both ARC Staff and Investigators and their staff on the ARC Department’s policies and procedures. Supervisors within the ARC Department are involved in training of ARC Staff members as well as Investigators and their staff in proper care and techniques used in laboratory animal medicine. Expertise in large animal surgical models and post operative care is mandatory.
Qualifications
- At minimum, completion of Community College Veterinary Technician Program or recognized equivalent
- CALAS, RLAT or RMLAT registered
- A minimum five years’ experience in a modern research animal facility
- Excellent surgical support skills with all animal species
- Excellent knowledge in providing critical care to all animal species
- Up-to-date knowledge of animal diseases
- Job requires ability to lift 50 lbs
- No known allergies to animals
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Computer literate, Word, Excel, Access, Outlook
This position participates on a regular on-call schedule, which may include after hour visits to facility and may require weekend and holiday supervision of staff
