Rorabeck Sowerby Theriault LLP is busy seven lawyer firm, practicing in the areas of family law (including child protection), real estate, wills and estates. We are looking for an articling student who is available to join our firm in Kingston, Ontario as soon as possible.
The ideal candidate will have an interest in family law or child protection law. This articling position will be primarily in the area of family law but there may also be an opportunity to expand into other areas of practice if qualified.
We are looking for a self-starter with a good work ethic, research and writing skills, a desire to work in litigation and an interest in family law.
We are located in Kingston and this position requires you to be in the office during work hours, although we have the option to sometimes work remotely depending on office needs. If you are not based in Kingston or the immediate surrounding area, please do not apply unless you can demonstrate that you are moving here.

Your roles and responsibility would include:
- Observing and conducting client interviews under the supervision of one or more lawyers of the firm;
- Undertaking research and preparing memoranda and legal opinions as assigned;
- Preparing correspondence, pleadings, motion materials, affidavits of service and facta as assigned;
- Assisting the lawyers of the firm with any tasks relating to real estate transactions as assigned;
- Assisting the lawyers of the firm with the preparation of wills or on any estate matters as assigned;
- Assisting the lawyers of the firm with conferences, motions and trials as assigned;
- Appearing at Court for administrative court appearances (i.e.: first appearances, to be spoken to dates, etc.) and procedural motions pursuant to the Family Law Pilot Project, and attendance at other appearances in court and before a tribunal as permitted;
- Using various legal software programs; and
- Ensuring carriage of matters in Small Claims Court for unpaid accounts.
