Role Overview
As a member of the Maintenance team, the Industrial Mechanic/Millwright is responsible for maintenance of production machinery and other equipment, including proper functioning and performance. The successful applicant must hold a Journeyperson Trade Qualification as an Industrial Mechanic/ Millwright. As this role is within a heavy industrial manufacturing setting, the work is fast-paced and requires the ability to lift up to 50lbs. Following all health and safety guidelines is a must.
The Industrial Mechanic/Millwright will ensure and oversee the performance, good condition and functionality of production machinery, other equipment and mechanical infrastructure (i.e. engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and production machines, and other equipment). This position is responsible for conducting repairs and maintenance, in accordance with diagrams, sketches, operation manuals, and manufacturer's specifications.
Main Responsibilities
Safety & Communication
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations (i.e. Health, Safety and Environment).
- Troubleshoot malfunctions and locate sources of problems by working with the Operator.
- Close communication with all Operators and Supervisors to analyze, debug and repair all intermittent machine issues.
- Check-in with Operators at the start of each shift to determine any issues that need to be completed immediately or planned for future repair.
- Daily review of Open Issues list between Operators and Millwright to address machine issues in all areas of the facility.
- Respond to items on the Open Issues list in a timely manner and accurately record the details.
Core Responsibilities
- Ensure optimal performance, lifecycle and production by guaranteeing smooth operation of production machinery and other essential equipment.
- Installation, maintenance, preventive maintenance planning, performance and repair of production machinery, engines, pneumatic, hydraulic equipment, instrumentation, motors, gear reducers, conveyors, power tools, etc.
- Carry out emergency repairs on equipment and facilities as necessary.
- Clean and lubricate production machinery, equipment, power tools and parts.
- Check oil levels and oil leaks of machinery and equipment.
- Dismantle and remove defective parts, and repair machinery, other equipment and power tools.
- Repair non-complex electrical/electromechanical equipment (in cases where regulatory licensing is not required).
- Perform welding repairs
- Diagnosing and repairing hydraulic equipment
- Operate hoists, cranes, forklift, drill press, grinder, welding machine, and other power / hand tools to make, replace, modify and repair parts. Start and assess performance of production machinery and equipment, as required.
- Inspect used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements, using rules, levels, calipers, micrometers, and other measuring instruments.
- Enhance or modify spare parts or assemblies to ensure optimal performance or lifecycle of production machinery or equipment
- Fabricate repair parts by using machine shop instrumentation and equipment.
Other Responsibilities
- Develop maintenance projects and supervise contractors carrying out work. Conserve use of external services by using in-house assistance to accomplish job results.
- Coordinate routine preventive maintenance or downtime with management and production workers.
- Maintain tools, equipment, parts, consumables and supplies inventories by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed equipment, tools, parts, and supplies; placing and expediting orders; verifying receipt.
- Ensure proper spare parts are on hand at all times. Determine inventory levels and ensure orders are input for proper delivery time.
- Keep precise records of work carried out, materials utilized and related costs.
- Utilize and take care of equipment and tools used in the work of maintenance.
- Initiate purchase requests for parts, consumables, tools, and service. Make inquires with suppliers and service companies for best prices and service.
- Shop for alternative sources for spare parts that perform better or are more affordable than OEM.
Compensation
- Base Pay: $31.97 per hour
- Premiums: A $8.35 per hour wage premium available for those with a relevant license or certificate

What You’ll Bring
- Must have an Alberta or Inter-provincial Industrial Mechanic/ Millwright Trade (Red Seal) Qualification.
- A minimum of 5 years’ heavy industrial work experience is considered an asset.
- A thorough professional with a practical mind, attention to detail and the ability to plan for preventative maintenance measures.
- The ideal candidate must be a reliable self-starter, work as a team and able to work autonomously, with strong problem solving skills.
- Able to read, interpret and follow diagrams, drawings, blue prints, sketches, assembly instructions, operations manuals, manufacturer's instructions, troubleshooting instructions and engineering specifications.
- Strong understanding of mechanical, electromechanical, general rotating machinery, wire production machinery, hydraulics, water cooling, pumps and other systems.
- Strong knowledge of general maintenance processes, best practices and methods.
- Strong working knowledge and dexterity use of tools and measuring devices such as calipers, rules, micrometer and other measuring tools.
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
- Ability to speak, read and write English.
- Available and willing to work overtime and be on-call.
- Adhere to all health and safety procedures, including the use of proper PPE (i.e. safety glasses, ear plugs, hard hat and steel-toed safety boots with non-slip sole).
