The Fort McMurray Recovery Centre (FMRC) is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Addiction Counsellor to join our team. FMRC is a 16-bed inpatient unit offering a structured 28-day treatment program for individuals experiencing addiction and related concerns. Reporting to the Manager and receiving day-to-day guidance from a Counselling Supervisor, the Addiction Counsellor will provide direct therapeutic services to clients while maintaining accurate and timely clinical documentation. Responsibilities include delivering psycho-educational counselling in both group and individual settings to individuals with concerns related to alcohol, drugs, tobacco, and gambling, including those with concurrent disorders and complex needs. The successful candidate will conduct comprehensive assessments, including substance use and suicide risk, and develop individualized treatment plans, safety plans, and aftercare supports using evidence-based practices. The role also involves case management, collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, and establishing strong relationships with community partners and referral sources to support coordinated care. In addition to a competitive rate of pay, Recovery Alberta currently has a Fort McMurray Allowance in place to an annual maximum of $12,480. This allowance is non-pensionable and is payable on an hourly basis for all hours paid at the basic rate of pay.
As an Addiction Counsellor III, you will provide quality, client focused, recovery based and culturally appropriate assessment, treatment, case management, crisis intervention, education and referral services for clients and their families; as well as community stabilization services. You will develop and implement treatment plans and provide a range of interventions which offer least intrusive and most appropriate services to clients and their families. You will also monitor and evaluate client progress and achievement of recovery goals and adapt treatment as needed. As an Addiction Counsellor III, you will depend on your excellent relationship building skills with clients, families, government staff and colleagues.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Addictions or a combination of a bachelor's degree in a related field with course work in addictions. A related degree combined with a diploma related to addictions, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Individuals eligible for registration under the Health Professions Act (Alberta) must maintain active registration. Individuals may require authorization/permission under regulation to perform restricted psychosocial interventions and/or restricted activities.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Recent clinical experience within the past year working in bed-based addiction treatment services is required. Additional recent experience in conducting comprehensive assessments including suicide risk assessments, developing treatment plans, and facilitating therapeutic groups. Registration in good standing with a relevant regulatory body is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications:
Detox experience is an asset. Experience working with complex addiction clients, including concurrent disorders, is strongly preferred. Skills in assessment, treatment planning, and group facilitation are valued. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, with strong teamwork, judgment, and accountability, is essential.
