Job Summary
Chess Logistics is a growing transportation and logistics company operating a diverse fleet across Canada and the United States. We are looking for an experienced Senior Planner & Dispatcher to join our operations team and take a lead role in the daily planning, dispatching, and coordination of our fleet.
The successful candidate will have strong transportation industry experience, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage multiple trucks, drivers, customers, and last-minute operational changes in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Plan and coordinate daily fleet operations for approximately 15–20 trucks per day, with schedules and loads planned 2–3 days in advance based on customer requirements, driver availability, equipment, and routes.
- Book and assign loads to the appropriate trucks and drivers while maximizing fleet utilization, minimizing empty miles, and ensuring operational efficiency.
- Manage last-minute operational changes, including delays, cancellations, breakdowns, driver availability, customer changes, and other unexpected issues while maintaining service commitments.
- Coordinate and communicate with drivers, customers, carriers, and internal departments to ensure all pickups, deliveries, appointments, and operational requirements are completed on time.
- Monitor daily truck and driver activity using Fleet Manager, including truck movements, driver schedules, availability, pickup/delivery status, and other operational information.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date information in the TMS, Fleet Manager, and other company systems, including loads, truck assignments, driver information, schedules, trip details, and operational changes.
- Monitor driver hours, equipment, and trailer availability to ensure dispatch plans are realistic, compliant, and properly covered.
- Proactively identify and resolve operational issues, including missed appointments, delays, equipment problems, route conflicts, service failures, and other exceptions.
- Work closely with Safety, Maintenance, and Operations teams regarding driver, truck, trailer, safety, maintenance, and other issues affecting daily operations.
- Provide operational updates to management and support continuous improvement of planning, dispatch, scheduling, fleet utilization, and transportation procedures while maintaining a high level of customer service.
- Adhoc responbilities as required from time to time
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 4–5 years of experience in transportation planning, dispatching, fleet coordination, or a similar role.
- Previous hands-on experience with Fleet Manager is REQUIRED.
- Strong knowledge of trucking and transportation operations.
- Experience planning and dispatching multiple trucks simultaneously.
- Experience with load booking, route planning, driver scheduling, and customer coordination.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian and/or U.S. transportation operations is an asset.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to make quick operational decisions while maintaining service levels and customer commitments.
- Ability to work independently as well as as part of a team.
