Mission Mart is a thrift store staffed 90% by volunteers, ensuring higher net profit margin to support the everyday work of Souls Harbour Rescue Mission — providing food, clothing, shelter, life changing programs and a message of Hope in Halifax, Bridgewater, Truro and Eastern Shore.
The Mission Mart Receiver will be a person who has strong people and organizational skills, and sees the value in maintaining order and systems. The Receiver will create a welcoming environment through positive reinforcement of donors and volunteers, have outstanding customer service, and efficient stockroom practices.
Hours: 40 hrs/week (weekend shifts required)
Qualifications:
- Knowledge and experience in related retail field
- Friendly and approachable customer service skills
- Ability to work in a mixed staff and volunteer team
- Ability to handle the physical requirements of sitting, walking, bending, squatting, climbing and twisting on an intermittent or continuous basis
- Ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs as needed
Specific Duties:
- Greet donors, meet them at their vehicles, and offer physical assistance with their donations
- Receive donated items and place them into designated outdoor bins for initial quality review
- Sort donations based on quality standards and carry acceptable donations into the warehouse
- Pack, stack, and organize garbage bags in the designated sorting area (“the mountain”)
- Carry bins of books to the book sorting area
- Ensure fire areas are kept clear of debris and donations
- Load large rolling bins with dozens of garbage bags to be taken to the production sorting room multiple times per day. Reload these bins with the unsellable bags for pickup
- Unpack and organize donated products
- Place acceptable items on pricer carts or storage shelving
- Transport rejected items to recycling or garbage areas
- Load donation partner trucks
- Load or unload storage pods located on the premises
- Use of appropriate lifting techniques and moving aids (dollies, carts), and partnered lifts when required
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized receiving area
- Other duties as assigned by Managers
