Expression of Interest - Power Systems Engineer
Manitoba Hydro International (MHI) is seeking qualified Power Systems Engineers for upcoming projects. As a Power Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for performing engineering consulting studies and provide user technical support of all MHI software products, primarily PSCAD™/EMTDC™.
You will play a key role in analyzing, modeling, and optimizing electrical power systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations. In this role, you will participate in technical studies, support reliable energy integration, and contribute to planning and design decisions for other utilities. You will be involved in developing new tools and methodologies to enhance existing products and study procedures.
Your Role:
- Conduct comprehensive system studies for both conventional and renewable energy projects, evaluating system performance, grid reliability, and grid impacts for control technologies (GLF, GFM, etc.).
- Develop expertise in relevant software platforms, including PSCAD™/EMTDC™, PSS®E, Dig SILENT™, DSA Tools™, Python scripting, and FORTRAN programming.
- Responsible for taking ownership of assigned system study activities, at all stages (from data gathering and modeling to analysis, interpretation, and reporting).
- Evaluate and validate client-provided data to ensure accuracy, reliability, and readiness for system studies.
- Develop study methodologies and simulation models while performing a variety of power system studies.
- Prepare and review technical reports that communicate findings, insights, and recommendations.
- Collaborate with various teams and clients, contribute to meeting discussions, and project planning.
- Support ongoing software development initiatives and execute assigned tasks to improve internal tools and processes.
- Continuously develop expertise in emerging technologies and advancements in power systems, including AC/DC systems, power electronics, distribution systems, and related engineering fields.
- Support PSCAD users by providing expert advice in accordance with Software Maintenance and Support agreements, and develop clear documentation, guides, and support material to assist users.
About You:
- Minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from a recognized University.
- Minimum of four years of experience as an Engineer-in-Training (or equivalent) in a related engineering field (Power Systems/power electronics, power generation, transmission, or distribution).
- Must be a member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba.
- A M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering is an additional benefit.
- Experience with PSCAD™/EMTDC™, PSS®E, Dig SILENT™, DSA Tools™, Python scripting, and FORTRAN programming.
- Experience with performing power system studies.
- Demonstrated ability to use computer programs intended for power system simulation effectively.
- Be self-motivated and have strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work in a project-oriented environment with multiple clients and deadlines.
- Have a demonstrated ability to organize, facilitate, and instruct seminars and formal courses.
- Willingness to work overtime based on project deadlines (paid overtime or banked overtime options available)
- Ability to travel by all modes of transportation when needed
Note: Engineers-in-Training can also apply to this Expression of Interest and will be considered if they meet the other qualifications. The Engineer-in-Training salary scale will apply.

Hours Worked: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (8 hours/day on a 9-day bi-weekly cycle)
Hybrid Schedule: Mondays and Wednesday option to work remotely
Compensation: $86,631.28 - $130,280.25 (Salary will be determined based on relevant years of experience, education, and qualifications.)
